great shot of one of my favorites, thanks. I wonder why no-one has done this scheme since?
Looking at the pic, is it the different shades of aluminum or are the fin tops and bottoms and wingtips showing evidence of having been painted & stripped?
thanks again

One of the very few WW-II shots that I have, shows precisely this airplane from a different angle.
Next time I go home, I'll scan the pix.

My guess is that those two photos were taken on the same day.

That clears up the question about paint on the lower tip of the verticle.

Help me out, I'm still confused a little. It looks like the lower parts are either painted very pale grey yellow, overpainted in silver or have been stripped of paint leaving a residue; am I correct? Or is it simply mud & dust from take-offs & landings?
nice pics of a very cool aircraft; now that I think about it, it looks like a tattoo across the shoulder blades...
cheers

And from the same aircraft I'm guessing as well. Glad someone was packing some colour film, but the b&w shot does have more detail.
again, great shots!

What's the story behind the two white stripes on each of the top turret's .50's?

I first saw the color image in a National Geographic mag. It might have been one of their photogs.
The color on the lower portion of the vertical looks more tan to me and if you look closely, the rear of the engine nacelles look to be painted the same color.
