Goodyear Corsair Crash Into Ohio Lake (1943)

Mon Jan 08, 2007 12:46 pm

I have heard of many people speculating about this, and have seen talk about this on a couple threads here.

The rumor is true that a FG-1D Corsair did crash into Lake Nimisila. It did so after the landing gear did not extend fully and the pilot could not land at Akron-Fulton Airport. The pilot jumped from the plane at about 7,000 feet and was fine (just minor bumps and bruises), and he saw the plane crash and "explode" into the lake.

Now, as for if the Corsair is still down there, Goodyear did recover it. There may be small parts left in the lake, but for the most part Goodyear recovered it. And the pics of the recovered plane are below.

(MAPS just received a ton of documents from Goodyear Aircraft that had been in the posession of Lockheed Martin sine they now own the ex-Goodyear Facilities at Akron-Fulton Airport. In them I found a ton of great things, and among them, I found the official reports, as well as pilot and witness testimonies from this crash.)

Any docs on F2Gs?

Did that documentation include data on F2Gs? I am trying to build up my files on the Super Corsair.

When I saw the header I though...oh no here we go again with the Corsair lake rumor. Thankfully, that is not the case. You think now the rumor will die?

Btw, all FG fans need to check out the book "Corsair KD431: Time Capsule Fighter" by David Morris. An excellent book on KD431's history with some neat shots of Goodyear birds at Akron. Highly Recommended to the FG fan.

Hmmmmm...I reckon I can fix that.....hell, the fuselage aft of the cockpit is in almost CHERRY shape....that tail wheel assemply/tail hook is ready for it's next carrier landing...!

Load 'er up on a trailer and bring her out here, we'll get started on her right away...

Thanks for posting (you tease)! Those are great photos, of a Birdcage Corsair. Its not an FG-1D. I don't doubt that it is the same aircraft, just that something in the report may have been mislabeled regarding the particular aircraft version involved.

Anymore in area lakes or buried.

Thanks
Lex

P.S. Don't tell the NAVY I was asking.

You are correct, that was not an FG-1D, that was my mistake. The crashed plane was GAC #54 (BuNo. 13045) and it was simply addressed as an FG-1. Out of habit I just added the "D" to the end of it. :?

I thought the same thing as Jim, here we go! Very cool photos, thanks for sharing. Now if we could just dig up that Napolean bird......

I know this is a 12-year-old post, but can anyone offer a better description of this collection of documents? e.g. How big was it? What else was included?
