Great shots indeed! I've not seen the one of
the SBDs over the CV.

While we are on the subject of photos maybe
someone can point me in the right direction.
I have seen a photo taken during Butch O'Hare's
defense of LEX in Feb '42 that I now cannot find.
It shows three (I think) of the Bettys splasing
almost simultaneously and the LEX. It must have
been shot from a screening DD. I'd like to find
that shot and any others of the Betty's going
down.

I've looked in "The First Team" and it has a
couple of shots of Ito's Betty going down. I've
looked in "Fateful Roundeveaus", B.T.'s F4F
book, and some others. I'd be grateful for any
help you could provide.


Anything with the Esders was great. I still miss
them and visit them at Barrancus from time to
time.

National Archives and my own colection of originals. Always on the lookout on ebay, garage sales, estate sales ect.

Have you got anything showing Bob McClurg of VMF-214 with
his Corsair? How about the Corsairs of VF-653 during Korea?

Just the one you've already seen. I've got a number of VMF-214 photos but am not a Pappy fan.
Although I did cooresponded with Chris Magee quite a bit and really liked him.

I'm not a big Pappy fan either. Too much time talking with
the AVG............

However, I do admire the men of '214. I had the opportunity
to meet several of them a few years ago.

Anything on VF-653??

I just read an article in the new issue of Naval History Mag. about the NHC and TIGHAR colaborating on the survey and possible recovery of one of the two TBDs from VT-5(Yorktown) that ditched off of Jaluit Atoll during the Feb 1942 Marshall Islands Raid. They even show a photo of a diver next to one of them. Quite well preserved from the looks of it. Unfortunately the website still has last months issue as the current one. Here's the link anyway. Maybe they will have it updated soon!?
