Magazine Subscriptions

i can see where the web saves bucks from subscribing to mags ya cheap s.o.b.s (only kidding

) but i like to sit down with a stiff drink at the end of a long day & read at my own comfort, with my keester parked in my chair, with no computer eye strain. my mags are more portable than a lap top, & less of a pain in the ass. as an author i find it easier to find reference material from the old stack of dead trees rather than doing a web search which usually brings up everything but what i'm looking for. it's frusterating has all hell to cull through all that info when you use the wrong search word set up. with a mag....... just turn to page what ever.

I second you Tom. Me to...when the mail "person" comes and leaves me a present in mail box it makes everything good for the evening. I can filter
out all the female voices (all consumed in their world) and enjoy an hour or so in "MY" world. (Me and a shot of Absolute).

Warbird Digest and Classic Wings Down Under.

I get the CAF Dispatch because I'm a member but it's really not much of a magazine anymore.

I've got all the Air Classics and Warbirds International from the first issues but as soon as the subscriptions run out I have no plans to buy them anymore.

My EAA and Warbirds of America membership run out at the end of November and I doubt that I'll renew either of them again.

I have all the Sport Aviation issues on CD and I think that is the best money that was ever spent on something that's totally useless! It only serves to keep me occupied in the airplane while flying to the desert but I sure wish more magazines would offer the CDs.

Classic Wings is the only commercial mag I get anymore . I also get the NATA mag, WOA, and American Rifleman as a result of memberships. When you join or renew EAA you can opt out of Sport Aviation and save a few bux. Everything else I let expire. I don't have time anymore. I have let expire Air Comix, Warbirds Int'l, Military Vehicles, Hot Rodding, Popular Hot Rodding, Vintage Racecar Journal, and a few others I'm sure that I have forgotten about.

magazine fundraiser each year... which I endorse since they buy lots

I agree, It's difficult to bring a computer into my libraries reading room. There is no desk and only one porcelain chair.

I tend to read more of the articles in the Mags that I might be more apt to pass over on the Net. Nothing like collecting more useless info in my head.

Magazines vs Internet - kinda tough to browse the Internet on commercial airline flights where I get most of my reading done way too many months this past year :badpc:

...plus I think Scott & I have similar libraries... :angry:

FYI - the most recent EAA Warbirds magazine has two good articles; one with a lot of "old" a/c pix and the other is the final installment on the post-war Bendix races.

Classic Wings - An awesome magazine since issue #1 - I have the complete set. Excellent photography, lots of worldwide news, outstanding survivor lists, etc, etc.

Warbird Digest - informative articles, great photography, lots of news
Warbirds International - will probably drop due to his CWH whining

My only subscription is to Classic Wings, which is the best magazine there is, full stop. I get the subscription every year from Mum for my birthday, but even if she didn't give it to me I'd still subscribe.

I used to subscribe to New Zealand Wings from about 1990 - 97, but I gave up my sub after Ross Macpherson, the editor, sadly died from cancer, and the magazine seemed to dip in quality imho. It also went cold on warbird content as Classic Wings Downunder was stealing its thunder by then.

However in recent years I have been buying it again from bookshops, and recognised that Calum Macpherson, Ross's son, had really brought it back up to scratch. It continues to be excellent under new editor and owner Rob Neill. I buy it every month again now and someday when i get organised I'll re-subscribe. I realise now that I wish I'd bought all the ones I've missed as back-issues are a mine of information. I have most copies from 1972-97 thanks to being given Dad's collection and also buying extras here and there. I will endeaour to make up the lost years somehow, and then start working backwards collecting right back to 1932 when it strted if I can. Fat chance of that though.

I used to buy Aeroplane Monthly, Flypast and Wingspan all from the UK too, but the internet gives me more than enough info on their scene nowadays.

Just as a side thought, it is good to check Ebay for subscriptions--they are much cheaper! For example, I bought my fiance a year of Road and Track for $2.50!
