I found one of the references I was looking for as to when the paint was applied-it's "Camouflage and Markings #19". The paint finally settled on was called Jet 622, a very high gloss paint originally developed for the P-61 night fighter. It says that a number of replacement aircraft sent over late in the war had the paint applied at depots. I have seen photos of B-29As at Renton with what seems to be factory applied black, but I think all the photos in this thread had the paint applied by the 315th in Guam.

Just joined the forums recently after someone pointed out the pictures in this thread.

I have a web page for the 315th Bomb Wing and would be happy to be able to use or receive any pictures of 315th Bomb Wing aircraft, facilities or personnel anyone has. I started the page with one picture my Father had of a B-29 flying over Northwest Field, Guam and have been able to build on it ever since. The page grew out of my questions to my Dad, "What did you do in the war, Dad?" And he really didn't recall much. The past two years, I have been attending 315th Bomb Wing reunions and talking with the veterans and getting their stories. The page is a place to document the history of the 315th and make it available as a virtual museum for those searching more information about the wing.

I've just come across some info on 'the Uninvited', is it the same a/c ?
Black undersides in late '44 ?

The "Uninvited" in tulsaboy's photos is S/N 42-63742, a Bell produced B-29B-40-BA with the 502nd Bombardment Group, 411th Squadron, 315th Bomb Wing. She went to the combat zone (based on Guam) in April or early May of '45.

42-6409 was a Boeing Wichita B-29-20-BW, and was back in the U.S. by the time the pictures in this thread were taken. Hope this helps- it seems that there were plenty of duplicate names given to aircraft during the War!
