In the Laurel & Hardy photo is that a real prop or studio prop, appears to be a Curtiss Electric brand. Never seen one on a C-47. Info??

No, that's either a C-33 or C-39 - or even a DC-2; the flat fuselage side is a dead giveaway.

The engine does appear to be an early R-1820 with the ignition harness behind the push rods. I cannot find the details for the DC-2 (and derivatives) but the DC-3 TCDS does allow the use of 'Curtiss propellers, hubs C532D, blades 89305' which, I think, is a similar configuration. A question had come up about the Laurel & Hardy photo before. My belief is that it might be a still from Air Raid Wardens or The Big Noise or possibly a publicity still for the war effort/ In any case I agree that it is a C-33, C-39, or DC-2.

RCAF Canso

Sorry to nit-pick but the illustrated aircraft is not a Canso but a Catalina. It is Z2138 which was built by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation at San Diego as a Model 28-5ME/Catalina I for the RAF. However, it was one of a number of RAF Catalinas that went direct to the RCAF having already arrived at the BAC preparation centre at Elizabeth City ready for ferrying to the UK. It flew to Dartmouth, NS on 20Jun41 and joined 5 (BR) Sqn and remained with the RCAF until SoC at Patricia Bay, BC on 21Aug46. It was sold by War Assets Corporation to Siple Aircraft Ltd and reduced to spares. The photo was taken at Dartmouth in September 1941 and it is wearing the squadron code 'ZD-' of 116 Sqn who received it from 5 (BR) Sqn in Jul41. Individual aircraft letter is 'D'. Neither Z2138 or any of the other RAF Catalinas that were supplied to the RCAF adopted the later name 'Canso' and they remained, at least on paper, as Catalinas. Great to see that photo in large format.

Thought this was an interesting picture. Not a lot of synchronization needed on Allied aircraft.


Ground crew synchronizing the nose mounted 7.92mm MG 17 machine guns of a Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1. The wooden disk attached to the nose is used to indicate where each round passes through the propeller arc. January 1941.
