These are a little different since they are, as of yet, not exactly museums, but foundations in the process of opening museums:

THE YANKS AIR MUSEUM, which has been in the planning stages since 1991, will be on the Aug. 13 agenda for the county planning commission. The complex would be built in six phases over five years on land just north of Greenfield. The planning commission will consider the EIR at its meeting.

This post is a bit different because it involves PDFs rather than actual images. The first is a proposal for an aviation museum in Bolivia. The other is the Heritage Flight Museum, which included renderings of their new hangar in their newsletters.

I've often wondered if the Alaska Aviation Museum ever had any plans to move given how cramped and awkward their current location is. Well, the other day I found my answer. I happened across a presentation from 2011 about how the museum upgraded its lights to LED. On the final slide were two renderings of a new building that appears to be located roughly 2,900 feet to the east on the south shore of Lake Spenard. It's a pretty impressive building and I doubt it will happen anytime soon, but it proves they were thinking about it.

In mid-2003, after being forced to disassemble their "center section" exhibit gallery due to the September 11th attacks, the apparently then named Minnesota Air Guard Museum created concept art and a model for a reimagined version. As pictured in the last entry below, the museum also had ultimately unrealized plans to relocate to the southern half of the Fort Snelling golf course roughly 3,400 feet to the southwest:

The California Science Center is currently in the planning stages for the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center to house their aircraft collection and the Space Shuttle Endeavour. As part of the above, they have built a scale model and placed it in a display case in the museum. A video tour of the model is available on YouTube and a second video has some shaky footage of the floorplans behind it.

Unfortunately, when it comes to aviation museums, the archival side of things often seems to be neglected in favor of the aircraft. Therefore, I was particularly happy when I came across some documentation a while back about the building of the National Air and Space Museum's Dulles Collections Center Expansion. While it was hinted at in a blog post about moving the museum's archives, the project has generally flown under the radar. If you're interested in the architectural design of a modern collections storage facility, it is some really informative reading. (For a similar large-volume, high-density storage concept, see the ReCAP facility at the James Forrestal Campus of Princeton University, and for a cheaper option, the Internet Archive's physical archive.)

Interestingly, easily missed on page 6 is a hint at another collections facility expansion. To the south of a small creek that crosses the property is the footprint of a large building. Not much information is available about this facility, but a video of a presentation during a 10 July 2014 meeting provides some details. Appearing at 1:38:35, it is labeled a "Large Object Prototype" and billed as a way to "reduce...reliance on leased collections storage space". It has been clear for years that NASM has wanted to move out of the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Silver Hill, Maryland. There have been mentions of transporting everything to Dulles, as suggested in a blog post. However, I could never figure out how everything would fit in the available space. This appears to be the solution.

These documents come from the National Capital Planning Commission, which has reports and presentations on number of other NASM related projects:

Finally, a rendering of the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar that was built by Hensel Phelps:

EDIT (24-06-30): In regards to what will replace the Silver Hill Facility if and when the Dulles Collections Center is completed, according to the Suitland Collections Center Master Plan, the buildings will be demolished and replaced by a series of 6 collections storage "Pods" and additional buildings in a "Campus Quad" layout. The first phase of this project, the construction of Building 38, has already been completed.
