It may be fine to a mildly interested fan but if you have a personal connection to the pilot, owner, aircraft, or all of the above...it can make your heart skip a beat. Reading "aircraft down" or "plane crash" are an immediate foreboding prologue. "Belly landing" offers an assurance of low risk before your next "click". If you don't care how personal friends, family, etc. receive devastating news, then by all means blunder on... I wouldn't wanna be your Mom if Dad has a bad day and you're the reporter...

Isn’t it also part of ATC responsibility to advise on the state of aircraft U/C whilst they are on finals..?! Or is there no full time ATC?

Two things:

1) The airport at Richfield is uncontrolled, therefore no ATC.

2) Even if there was an ATC facility, it is not their explicit responsibility to advise aircraft on the status of their landing gear. Now, ATC does have a responsibility to issue "safety alerts", but these don't usually involve undercarriage configurations. Now, some ATC facilities will advise pilots if they see something is wrong, but it's not a requirement and you can't rely on them for your gear check. Ultimately, in the United States at least, the PIC is directly responsible for ensuring the landing gear is down prior to landing.

Curiously - for me - I have family that live in the area. We flew into Richfield many times when my grandparents were alive.

Never had any warbirds stop by when I was there.

The Army Air Trffic Control routinely transmits a “ check gear down” when we are flying. Fixed wing into their base. I believe they call it on short final approach. It’s probab saved millions of dollars in repairs over the years. I don’t think anyone else has that call out, but I’m not sure .its not a civilian ATC call out.

It doesn't really happen at any civilian field I've ever been to.

I hate to see the FJ get pranged again, no matter the cause. There are so few mid-1950’s jets flying or under restoration, especially USN types, that each scrape cuts deep.....
