That’s Igor Sikorsky in his signature fedora. According to Baugher - Sikorsky XR-5, serial 43-28239 - Lend-Lease to Royal Navy as FT848. Requisitioned by USAAF despite UK protests. To Sikorsky Corp Oct 25, 1949.

Thank you, Mark, for another excellent photo essay, mish-mash or otherwise!

First time I've seen this photo. One of the Belgian Buffalo's, looks like NX56B, when the negative is flipped correctly. I wonder if this is one of them that spent the war languishing on a hillside on Martinique with a bunch of SBC-4 Helldivers? Great shots, thanks Mark!

EDIT
NX56B was the first Belgian Buffalo off the line and was discovered destroyed at Darmstadt, Germany after the war per...

Pretty sure I've seen several of those on the cover of Wings/Airpower, too.

Thanks from me, too, Mark! Some O-47s and B-18s I hadn't seen before. Re the B-17 formation shots, I managed to get one definite serial and one probable:

B-17G trainer 42-31733.jpg

42-31733, and...

B-17G trainer 42-37996.png

I think it's 42-37996. Based on their record card info from David Osborne, they were both based at Orlando, FL between January 16th and January 30th, 1945, so that should help date the photo.

And Scott, I don't know if you can use these photos for the Registry; but just in case, you're missing one for B-23 39-28:

I tweaked the color a bit to get the red out.

What's with the Baltimore's bomb bay?
Doors open with the two ends faired in with wood and canvas.
Were they flown out carrying spares in the bomb bay?

This Liberator is flying over Hoboken NJ with lower Manhattan visible in the background. Its looks funny because the image is flipped.

I asked about that a while back on a similar photo - turned out it was a fairing for an oversized fuel tank for the ferry flight across the Atlantic.
