Hi, we're looking at the fuel valve for our T-6 and looking at options. It's a NOS item but the cork cone isn't great. Are Teflon/plastic cones legal and available, or is an alternative the better way to go.

We've never had a problem with the cork cone in our PT-19 so are happy to use cork if any are available........

Banaire used to sell the teflon cones, but when I called them they recommended that I not buy one! They said that they did not seal well and it was hard to get a good cutoff of fuel when closed. You have to get a field approval and demonstrate a clean, drip free shutoff.

C and J Aviation took Andair's fuel selector and got the STC for it. I've installed them on two different airplanes, they are a direct replacement and well made.
I think the Aeroshell guys use them. C and J usually has a booth at OSH with a cutaway valve that you can look at.

I can share the reason you do not want a Teflon cone. I installed one with a field approval 30 years ago. It seemed to work ok for a while but in the summer heat it would be hard to switch. So bad that I thought the rod or gears would break. Switched it back to cork. Also the cork should have black graphite powder rubbed into it. The powder imbeds in the aluminum housing and gives it lubrication. A fuel valve rebuilder warned me not to lubricate with fuel lube. When I need to replace another one I will probably buy the C & J unit.
