Warbird Information Exchange

A great show indeed, one of the best in many many years at Osh. A few things I wish would have been done fifferently, but there were many things well done. Texas Flying Legends just plane rock their segment. That is what a warbird demo should look like. And they are awesome guys to boot.

Yep, great show this year. I loved that the rare stuff flew in the show too. The contenders flew in the show. The only plane I wanted to see in the show that I didn't was the Vampire, and I saw it fly 3 different times anyhow.

The Mosquito was really fast down on the deck. IT picked up speed like an anvil on each descent. The F-4 was flown precisely and it was hard for me to believe that the USAF is still funding , albeit as a drone, a flyable F-4. Dean did a great job with the F-100 and he likes to hit the afterburner right in front of airshow central. YOu can feel the percussive effect hit you when he does that. Actually I was very impressed with all the Vietnam era contingent. Lots of speed and dogfight type turns on each other. They aircraft looked like real fighter jets not pretend L-29's or L-39's.
It was disappointing to see the Privateer parked so far down on the northern most area of warbird parking. I remember the first year the CAF's B-17, LB-30, and B-29. Each time they were parked on the south perimeter of the warbird area and , especially the B-29, had huge throngs of people around them. The PB4Y with it's tail parked perpendicular to the crowd line was almost impossible to see if you weren't looking for it. Those guys that have gotten her in excellent mechanical shape deserve a more prominent parking space. The Privateer has had two legendary careers, military and fire fighting.

It is always neat to see what I missed and what I didn't get to see fly. I agree this was the best show in quite some time in my opinion.

I must get there one year! Just wondering about Mustang Sierra Sue and the painting of the blue zig zag on the cowlings. Was it a work in progress as I see one photo where nothing was there and then you see the chap carefully painting them on. Some great aircraft and awesome photos. Being a Kiwi I was proud to seee the Mosquito had won both the WW2 Grand Champion and Avspecs got a very well deserved Golden wrench for her rebuild.

This artist painted the bolt on one side during the Warbirds in Review presentation. It was an interesting side event to the discussion. They also touched on the process they used in taking black and white photographs of different hues of blue to correctly match the color of the blue that is only documented in black and white. It was a great presentation. I know they were streaming the WIR presentations live. I have not had the chance to see if they are archived for viewers to go back and watch as re-runs. I hope that is possible.

All that detailing to get the paint job accurate and then polishing the skin to a mirror-like finish spoils the look. I'm not a fan of the over-polished warbirds. They look nice and shiny but far from authentic.

I've seen the aircraft several times now, and the skin isn't polished. It just looks like new aluminum which until it's all scratched up does pick up reflections.
