I am looking for the actual color samples from the book "Army-Navy Aircraft Standard Colors", ANA 506 (Chrome Yellow) and ANA 633 (Fluorescent Red-Orange).

Does anyone have these two samples I could buy or borrow? Complete set?

I believe the equivalents listed in the modern FED STD 595 system are close, but not identical, to the old ANA color system. I would like to see for myself.

Thanks,

Ken

I have an original 506 called Orange Yellow card that I could possibly loan out if it was returned as good as it was when it left. Some restrictions may apply!

Sorry no 633.

Hi Ken,

You are correct that the two colors are not the same - they're not even related.

ANA 603 is commonly called "chrome yellow" after the similar artists' pigment, but as you can see from Taigh's post, the official name is Orange Yellow. (There is no chrome yellow pigment in the formula for ANA 603.) FS 595a color 13538 is actuallly a very good match.

ANA 633 is one of the two fluorescent colors standardized by the military in the late 1950s. The other - ANA 634 Fluorescent Yellow Orange - was, well, yellower, and was rarely used. The organic nature of these two paints meant that they rarely lasted more than six months before they had to be reapplied. Since 633 looked like 634 as it began fading, it made more sense to start with 633 and make the paint job last as long as possible. I can't get to my 595 books at the moment, but there is a good equivilent for 633 there, and I'll dig it out for you later.

If you don't mind the question, what are you trying to paint? I might be more use to you if I know what you're reproducing.

Finally, while I don't have extra copies, if you're ever in the Washington DC area, I'd be happy to let you examine my samples.

Cheers,

Dana

Thanks for the replies!

Taigh, I may be in touch about your generous offer!

Dana, I may have worded my query poorly.

I have an interest in possibly painting a T-28C project one day in the future, and I like the original factory Orange-Yellow scheme (ANA 506) the best. Some of the original yellow parts that I have, in original sealed boxes, do not match the Fed-Std cross-over number FS 13538 very well in my opinion. These parts are from the 1955-1957 time frame. Maybe 1943 ANA 506 had changed by 1956. I just wanted to compare the ANA 506 chip to these parts. (Maybe lacquer painted parts kept in cardboard boxes change color with time too!?)

Another scheme that is of interest to me is the T-28 scheme of the 1960 to 1964 time frame. It is Fluorescent Red-Orange (ANA 633) and White. This scheme is not to be confused with the the later, and more practical to maintain, International Orange (FS 12197) and White scheme.

I don't think there is one civilian T-28 currently painted to represent the 1960-1964 scheme. (This scheme has the front half of the wings, the nose, lower fuselage, stabilizers, and vertical fin painted ANA 633, with the balance White.)

I do have a T-28C rudder painted in ANA 633, but it is faded. The Fed-Std cross-over from ANA 633 is FS 28913. It may be a perfect match, but from what I have read about the cross-over from the ANA system to FS system, the colors were not identical, but were "pretty close". The Munsell numbers published show they are different between the two systems, and unfortunately the Munsell numbers for the ANA fluorescent colors are missing completely. I am not sure if the samples were deemed unworthy to test due to the nature of the fluorescent paints, or the samples were just missing to test.

ANA 633 was used on many different type aircraft and rotorcraft, and all services. I find it hard to believe no sample cards exist. I would still like to have seen what a ANA 633 sample looked like, kept out of the light.

In the end, the Fed-Std cross-overs may be close enough, and I am beating my head against a wall. I just wanted to try and get it right!!

Thanks again.
