Again your thinking too broadly. Speak to any militaria dealer after the fall of the wall in 1989 and they will tell you the Russians did not discard anything, and there are still thousands of WLA's coming out of the woodwork in Russia today from lease lend.

None of those countries operated Tigers either.

They didn't operate Tigers due to the fact they had their own Heavy Tank in the JS series, light years ahead of Allied design in 1945. What better way to show they were superior to the west, however the Panther was a better IMO medium tank from the wartime period and don't forget there were a LOT around.

Plus the Czechs made their own version of the sdkfz 250 Neu and sdfkz 251 semi tracks (the OT810 that re-enactors and your own Peter Jackson love to convert to WW2 spec)


Communist countries did operate WW2 German armour however - the fact they filmed KH in Yugoslavia in 1970 was due to the large amount of US armour and equipment there

Interesting thanks. Yes I am aware trucks, small arms etc were still in use until the 70s-8s ( and remarkably the machine guns etc still today. When I was in Austria in the late 1980s a buddy showed me some MG-34/42s the Austrians still used for training), however I should have made it clearer that I am talking about main battle weapons - tanks and aircraft.

I think the Russians will disagree that the Panther is a better tank than the T-34. Certainly better technically, but not in a reliability sense.
I think one of the reasons Tigers were not used post war is that they were relatively scarce, even at peak production they were only generally available to the elite SS and Wehrmacht Divisions. Being scarce also meant parts were even harder to find.

Anyway, back to aircraft, I think it was a 1950s flypast of Mosquitos over Prague at which a high ranking Soviet delegation attended which saw the Soviet authorities order them destroyed. They were not amused that the Czech AF were flying British aircraft and had them replaced with Soviet types. Strangely inconsistent however, as they were still able to operate the Czech built 109s (Avias) up until 1952.

Its just not that long ago we didn't think any of these survived until someone went to Kubinka - and even then we didn't know there was a place like kubinka !

in the trailer / preview....... fyi, 1 of the tankers is wearing ww2 / korea / cold war goggles w/ the soviet aluminum rectangular shape. i sold a pair to doug champlin years ago when they were unattainable before the collapse of the ussr. both pilots & tankmen wore them. i wonder how those goggles factor in to the movie. those goggles are not so rare anymore.

I am fanatical about the accuracy of 'period' equipment in films. Apparently the production company was pretty obsessed too - they used Axis Track Services, which is the business name of the guys from the popular TV show 'combat dealers' here in the UK - they specialise in restoring and selling authentic WWII vehicles. I met the boss Bruce Compton at this year's 'War & Peace' show and he's a very knowledgable guy. In the TV show, you can see them doing all the research, using the expertise of well known historians such as Hilary Doyle, to make sure they get the details right. Fascinating stuff.

Anyway, I'm hoping all that realistic stuff will make the film a winner

I don't think there is any back story as such, I had a close friend who was an US and WSS extra onset and he said variations with all the "costume" happened almost on a daily basis. Things being added and subtracted on a whim of an art department head or webbing supervisor. Not dissing the film just recounting what I was told.

I think the M2HB behind Brad's shoulder is missing a fairly major component too

Saw it tonight, its a great movie. Extremely well filmed and really worth seeing. One of the best WW2 films I've seen in a very long time.

Unfortunately for me I've seen too many airplane, tank, ship and equipment photos. I'm jaded. Just saw this movie. Entertaining? Yes. Authentic looking stuff? Yes. Plot? Typical Hollywood. Realistic? Other than the equipment, uniforms etc. No. Any scene that showed airplanes was the typical CGI overkill. IMO CGI is great for sci-fi and animation and the people who create stuff with CGI still have a long way to go as far as understanding airplanes. Go see it to spend money and be entertained as Hollywood would want It. Just leave your attention to reality at home.

For this movie I'll give it a 7 out of 10 as it was at least entertaining. Band of Brothers is still hard to beat IMHO

Sounds promising, and probably worth a rare trip to the movie theatre.

The publicity about 'Fury' reminded me that I never got around to editing most of my photos from Classic Fighters 2013 Airshow in NZ. The ground entertainment included a Weta Workshop Tiger I replica, as well as a fair number of re-enactors. And for aviation content, a Natter!

I'm an aviation guy and know very little of WWII vehicles (a guy only has so much time for interests ).
But its good to see any film remind younger people of the wartime service of my father's generation.

Also, I noticed from the results of the recent armored vehicle collection sale, that Sherman's are now bringing $400,000.
Who knew?

Saw it yesterday...it is a great popcorn movie...1000 times better than red tails and Memphis Belle...but that said they had the potential to tell a great true story, instead we get a Hollywood story. The character from Georgia was completely unnecessary IMHO. I'm no critic but it could have been better. From an accuracy point of view...looked perfect.
