B-25 into the river near Pittsburgh during WWII?

One of my Aviation History Magazine readers wrote a letter to the editor saying that he'd heard during his youth of a B-25 that crashed into the Monongahela or the Allegheny River somewhere near Pittsburgh during the war years and to this day has never been found. Which seems odd since those rivers aren't all that big/wide/deep. Anybody heard anything like that?

It happened in 1956. Tons of information on it, but it still hasn't been found. Most likely due to the aliens. Shhhh, I've said too much.

It went down in the Monongahela. Rumors that the military came in the dark of night and salvaged it! There's also rumors that it hasn't been located due to the many barges that were intentionally sunk and one of the barges went down on top of it.

My friend Clair was driving home from work when it went in. It went over the Homestead High Level Bridge, and splashed down on the bend on the river. He said when it went over the bridge, both props where just windmilling. Years later while we were volunteers at Air Heritage, a ex-rail road employee came by to visit. He said that at the time of the crash he was running a steam powered crane on rails. He got a call to lift it out of the water. They cut it up and put it in railroad cars. There are rumors that it was still in there. All of the hype is because it was carrying triggers for the Atomic bomb. All men got out of the plane, but one went back in for his gear, and drowned in the plane. Recently on a search they did find a prop from a B-25.

Given the floods that have occurred in the river, particularly with Agnes in 1972, the remains of the plane are either completely silt covered, or have been pushed well down the Ohio River. Or, the gentleman who mustangdriver spoke to has the "real" end of the story.

Many locals say that it was taken out that night.

Mustang, do you remember Joe and Dee Lucas from Air Heritage? Dee said her farther went down to the river and watched as they pulled it out.
