Boyington and his Alma Mater

While not exactly news of a warbird in particular I am very upset at a decision by the University of Washington Student Government not to honor Gregory Boyington because a Marine and a man who killed people was not the kind of person that the University considered fit for honors.

This really left me as close to a complete rage as I have ever been. I am going to write some letters and make some phone calls.

It said that one of the student senators was stupid enough to say that they already had enough memorials for " rich white people"....

Perhaps they arent teaching history at that college? ( he was part sioux indian and could never be called rich.)

I think I'll be writing a letter myself as this is just wrong and shameful.

As a UW alumnus myself, I can't say I'm surprised. This is the same school that tries to kick ROTC off the campus every couple years for various reasons.

But, to be honest, does it really matter in the grand scheme? Boyington is what he is, regardless of if there's a memorial to him in north Seattle.

Hey UW kids...who do you think left the money to build the building you're sitting in...probably some "rich white" guy who made a honest living by creating jobs and opportunities for people. Now he's seen as a "bad guy" by spoiled kids like you.

It was pointed out by the university that just one person mentioned "white guy" monuments on campus and that did not mean he voted against it...but in today's atmosphere, ANY mention or race is wrong...and can be construed as racist.

Before this post devolves into another flamer, did any of you take the time to read the actual minutes of that assembly? The Student Senate's vote on the resolution was 45-45-10: a tie. It was the chair who cast the deciding "nay" which defeated the resolution.

Instead of focusing on the young woman who doesn't like Marines, why not rejoice over the fact that at such a breeding ground for liberalism (that many of our nation's universities have become) half of the senate was actually in favor of erecting such a memorial.

Over the years, our country's veterans have made individual and collective sacrifices to ensure that everyone has the ability to hold and express his own opinion. I will always defend your right to an opinion, so why involuntarily reach for the napalm toggle each time someone expresses an opinion which is contrary to yours--even if founded on questionable evidence?

If they ever do honor a graduate/veteran lets hope it's someone other that Pappy Boyington who would actually deserve such an honor. Like maybe Gen Bob Galer a highly decorated Marine ace and career general officer.

Just another example of how totally out of control the faculty and student government are at many of our universities of lower learning. Political correctness is ongoing and completely insane.

I graduated years back from Oregon State University. At that time it was a down to earth college where people had level heads and common sense. In the years since then it has become a bastion of liberalism and the faculty is populated with a bunch of idiots that would make Hanoi Jane proud.

Now that Seattle has become San Francisco North and the University of Washington is right up there insanity-wise with U.C. Berkeley this crap such as what is happening regarding Boyington will continue and expand.

Look what just happened with the USS Iowa that was going to be an awesome floating monument in San Francisco bay. The mentally ill "Progressives" in the city government managed to scrap the whole plan because they did not feel that the Iowa sent a "peaceful" message to vistors and residents! What a bunch of CRAP!!

Personally, I have had it with political correctness and will fight it ANY time I have an opportunity to engage such idiocy.

At this point in time I wish to comment that a statement was issued by UW stating that certain members of the Student Government did not say what they did say.

This was was followed by an apology.

From the minutes of Feb 07, 2006-HUB310.

Jill Edwards-"didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."

Ashley Miller-"many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men."

I won't apply any labels such as Liberal. etc., to the appalling level of ignorance that represents the institutionalized cretinism that is higher education in today's world, ie, politically correct which simply translates that the truth is a lie and vice versa.

I am also becoming somewhat annoyed at the many odd comments on Boyington's character.

He was not a POW but was classified as a Special Prisoner by the Japanese military, as were a number of other important allied prisoners.

I have seen his repatriation photos and he did not exactly appear ready to dance.

He was first and foremost a fighter pilot. He flew with the legendary Flying Tigers in China and that buys respect in my book. I remain implacably incensed at the grave insult offered to him and every other soldier who ever served in our Armed Forces.

I do not and never will accept their apology as I regard it insincere and false.

I close by saying that I really enjoyed helping to light this on off.
