Can anyone name the designations of the various fuel trucks seen in these photos? A warbird fighter is out of my price range, but I bet it might be a fun project restoring an old fuel tanker.

Most look lke GMC CCKW chassis both LWB and SWB, GM built over 810,000 6x6 trucks in both open and closed (with metal doors) cab styles. STUDEBAKERS had a more civilian style cab with a laid back windshield and front fenders that had a more distinct, sharper bend down to the running boards, GM's had a graceful sweeping fender bend. Bigger trucks like AUTOCAR and FEDERAL were much squarer and more massive.
Check G503.com I don't think CCKW's are that hard to find-

Hi Rob, if I wasn't so friggin lazy today I would have spent more time adding information to these photos. Most of them have a small bit of info associated with them in the Fold3 archives. (some of it is not that accurate) Sorry I didn't add anything as I was just too lazy. (poor excuse I know) If you visit the Fold3 archives and search "refueling" most all of these photos will show up and I noticed some of the fuel trucks being described as to what type they are. I agree one of these type vehicles would be a nice project. Let me know if there is one photo in particular and I'll post whatever info there may be.

The first few photos with the B-29 are actually oil trucks. B-29s had 85 gallon oil tanks on each engine.

I'd sure like to have a fuel truck like on of these and get it operational.

Mark, those are frickin' fantastic. I simply love the ones with the background of palm trees. I really have never given much thought to it but the amount of fuel consumed by aircraft in WW2 had to be 100's of millions of gallons.

On the first page, the seventh pic from the top and the fourth from the bottom look like the 318th fg 73rd sq. probably Saipan. P47D's, white id strips and wing tips. They had them on Bellows TH also, but every pic I have seen of Bellows has hills in it. On the 4th from the bottom, the gent on the far right that is standing between the trailers looks like Bill Epstein from Chicago. His dad was a judge I beleive. And gasing up airplanes was his job in the squaderon. Even after my dads fatal accident in '77 he and his wife would drive up to Minnesota to visit almost every summer. He passed on a few years ago at about 90 years old. I heard a lot more stories from him than from my dad. RIP Bill.
