My dad flew the bomber version of the F-101 out of Bentwaters. He told me of many occasions when he and his fellow pilots would hop in some other jet that was visiting the base, or if he met up with someone he knew at another location who was flying something else, and take it for a 'test drive' - usually with no instruction at all. He told me the most 'interesting' hops of this type were in the F-104 and F-105, both challenging jets normally requiring a lot of instruction to successfully get off (and back onto) the ground. I guess its a testament to his piloting skills (and dumb luck) that he survived. Anyway, in those days, and earlier, this was apparently quite common.
He did tell me that his wing (the 81st) frowned upon strangers flying their jets, because of the Voodoo's tendency to pitch up if given too much AOA, particularly on landing.
