Well .....when you have flown one..........you've flown half of em. Can't believe I had a chance to buy one (had the money in my pocket) a flyer by the way, and turned it down. I wanted Big Iron!!! Well heck that's one big airplane!

Definitely marks the transition from the big prewar O-Birds to the smaller grasshoppers of the L-series.

Old Paul Mantz, later Tallmantz bird. It was used to film many movies as it turned out to be an excellent camera platform.

There was an TV show that ran briefly in the late '70s callled "Spencer's Pilots." One episode featured what I think was an L-1 (I assume Kermit's) having some sort of emergency, and the landing gear falling off in flight. I was only a kid, but as I recall It looked like the pilot intentionally jettisoned the gear at about a hundred feet. Not sure how he got it down..slid in on the grass maybe?

<edit> Found some of the show on Youtube (dubbed in German.) This clip heavily features the L-1, although it doesn't include the wheels-falling-off scene I remember. N-number confirms it's the same aircraft now owned by Mr. Weeks.

This one I had on my list of "Jail Birds" airplanes shackled and forbidden to fly, at least for a lifetime or two. It has been under restoration since the 1970's. Hard to understand why they are so rare. There are more Waco Gliders in existence than L-1's. Shouldnt there be several in the Alaskan Bush?

I think I counted 7 when I was writing up a news piece a while back. 6 in the US, one in the UK

Somewhere in my vast, totally disorganized photo archives, I have pics of an L-1 that I shot at Breckenridge some time probably in the late 1980s. As I recall, it was painted overall silver and it had the red "meatball" in the center of the star of the national insignia. During the show, much to the delight of the crowd, the L-1 performed a ve-e-e-e-e-e-ery slow flowby, almost standing still (of course, the typical west Texas wind, blowing at probably 30 MPH, makes that kind of thing a lot easier to accomplish).
