Goodwin Sands Dornier 17 recovery happening this hour

Sun Jun 02, 2013 3:58 pm

You can follow the RAF museum website, or follow the RAF museum on Twitter at https://twitter.com/RAFMUSEUM to track the process. I hope the recovery goes according to plan!

EDIT: Looks like the lift has been delayed to 0100 tomorrow morning due to high winds.

I hope the recovery is successful and the plane makes it to dry land in one piece.

16:30 London local.

It is up and looks much better than I dared hope.

Relatively intact, fuselage has separated aft of the bomb bay and the outer wings are missing. Should be at Legends next summer if they pull their fingers out!

I believe I would have saved my money on that one. I know its the last one left but that just isn't much to go on.

I agree Peter. This looks far better than one would expect after more than seven decades at the bottom of the channel.

Extinct no longer. Here's hoping for all the best in conservation :drink3:

Thanks for updating us WIXers.

Congratulations to all involved.

It is remarkable to me that they were able to recover her substantially intact - with less foresight and planning she could easily have collapsed and fallen back into the sea like some other salt water attempts. In my personal opinion this recovery an 'extinct' and historically very significant type was worth the money, time and effort.

Im amazed they went after it by the looks of it....kind of makes me sad...a few more years and nothing will be left of all the great sunken aircraft scattered all over the seas...time is running out for the lost birds swimming in salt water..

Wow, there's not much left, but that's infinitely better than nothing left at all. Kudos to the recovery team, and best wishes to the preservation team!
