Thanks for the info about Mr. Kinney guys. Sad.

Yes, I would love to talk to your friend about his T-101 experiences and to possibly see his photos. He can call me or email or I will do the same to him too. taigh@twinbeech.com shop number 209 982 0273

Yes, please send photos of the guns. I am not ruling anything out at this point. I need to spend our few dollars as wisely as possible so I am open to what is the best for our Harpoon.

Taigh,
In your vast collection of Harpoon photos from the past, would you possibly have any of a) 15-1200 37234 N7458C..b) N7272C? Any requests from you, I'll see what I have archived.

I am also searching for paperwork for the starboard side cargo door that was on some of the Harpoons.

Thx!

Sorry Gary, the only thing I have is a photo from airliners.net.

I've never seen shots of the cargo door but would love to learn more.

Taigh,

Since the Harpoon is slowly getting wrapped up, I thought I do my semi-annual check in to see if the ex-Hudson AT-11 is next on the restoration list?

The interest in working on the AT-11 is there and growing but the priority list of other work once again prevents any progress. Once the Harpoon is further along and business allows then I will pull her out and begin the tinkering process.

A small Harpoon update:

I found another one of the missing control boxes for the Harpoon namely the C-30A/ARC-5 on eBay over the weekend. The seller was kind enough to set up a buy it now for us to get it at a greatly reduced price. It is amazing how much some of this gear is going for between collectors and restorers. This one was real nice since it was still sealed in the can and is in near perfect shape. It is the box that mounts over the copilots head and controls the transmitters of the ARC-5 command set. What makes this one special is that it controlled the VHF transmitter and by default the VHF receiver too. This control could switch between the four crystal controlled VHF channels.

The old style C-30 was a push button style box that was replaced later in the War with the more reliable rotary switch C-30A control which is also appropriate for our PV-2D. While the C-30 is more common and Jay Wisler has them new in the box, the C-30A's are a bit hard to find so we are lucky to have found such a beautiful example. Great thanks also go to the seller for his generosity especially when he could have sold this for a lot more. Like three times more

Gotta love black wrinkle finish especially 60+ year old black wrinkle finish!

I have put a Sperry B-17 top turret for sale. Part of the proceeds will go toward our PV-2D Harpoon project so please spread the word to anyone who you think might have the slightest interest as we need as much as we can get. The more money raised from this sale the more the Harpoon gets so email this link to all who may be interested or at least anyone who might be able to spread the word for us.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181119277704

This is a display ready turret that rotates and elevated by hand. It isn't a complete turret as you can see but its the upper portion of the original ring casting, gun platform and dome mounted on a roller bearing ring gear so it moves very smoothly and elevates easily by hand. The turret is mounted on a three legged stand but it can also be easily mounted in a flying aircraft with some straight forward work to make the installation airworthy.

The Sperry upper is the hardest turret to find today so it is quite sought after by turret Geeks, collectors, museums and B-17 owners. It is a fact that there are more surviving B-17's around today than there are Sperry upper turrets. Most of the turrets on flying B-17's today are original, reproduction or fiberglass domes only with guns that are fixed in place. I believe that none of the turrets in B-17's flying today can rotate or elevate.

This turret has a factory original dome complete with its WWII Olive Drab paint on the outside and the Army Bronze Green paint on the inside still intact. It is a true museum piece as it was still sitting in the factory that made it in WWII. Thanks Albert for saving it! This dome and the gun platform are both unrestored and are original just as they were made. I did replace the center plex of the dome as it was missing when I got it but it has been replaced using the original hardware except for five screws and nuts.

What is cool about this type 6 dome is it is painted OD green which means it is from an early model B-17G as the later natural metal aircraft had domes that were painted silver.

Here is a YouTube video of my daughter taking the turret for a spin:

Here is a web page with more photos and information about the turret:

Thanks for spreading the word about this. As I mentioned the more it sells for the more the Harpoon gets and we sure can use every dime possible to keep the old gal up and running.

Shane,

Your the Man! Thanks for the donation!!

This Saturday we're waking the Harpoon up from her Winter nap. Ken sent out an email asking for volunteers to come out and lend a hand.

I need to fire up the oven and make some tunnel gun glass for our Hot Stuff friends. Sorry guys that it has taken so long. I suck but hopefully I can make up for it with some glass for you all.

Anyone want to come out and help this Saturday please do so.

We are also trying hard to get the Harpoon to Oshkosh this year. So far we have four going but we need three more to make it happen. For a donation to our museum you can come along on a free flight to OSH. Your donation pays for the house near OSH for the week. We are leaving Stockton, CA on Saturday July 28th. Right now we are thinking about hitting the Topeka Warbird get together on the way back from Oshkosh to join up with the other two flying PV-2's. we will return to Stockton on Sunday August 4th.

Everyone will get lots of PV-2 flying time to OSH and back and I will sign off any of that time as dual instruction in your log book should you desire. This will be very cheap heavy twin flight time as well as great experience.

If you know anyone who might be interested in going to Oshkosh with us in the Harpoon please send them our way. We need a few more to make this work not to mention that it is going to be a trip of a lifetime.

I'll post some more information on the trip and the amazing house we are staying in later. Come on along on a great harpoon cross country experience.

Well, after a long slumber through winter we finally began the process of waking the old gal up for her upcoming flying season. Ken has a few air shows scheduled for the Harpoon as we want to get her out to the public and especially try to find any Harpoon vets that might be attending.

Not to say that progress has not been going on throughout the winter, quite the contrary, it is just hard to photo document some of the goings on for various reasons. Progress has been steady on several special projects that we hope to bring to light as soon as we can.

Yesterday we had our first work official day of 2013. Ken sent out an email to our list and asked for anyone who might want to come out to do so. Andrew showed up before me and then Ricky came out on his day off. Ricky and I figured that replacing the leaking nose gun bay retract cylinder might be a good project for Andrew. Andrew is the kid who was helping out with the casting project and he is a quick learn.

We happen to have two extra retract cylinders from a D model gun nose PV-2 so Ricky and Andrew opened one up and replaced the O rings inside with fresh parts. Here is Andrew removing the cap from the cylinder that was put there in 1947 according to the tag.

Image

The old cylinder is removed and Andrew learns about cotter pins and castle nuts and box-open end wrenches.

Image

The nose is supported so the cylinder can come out

Image

Yes, it is that much fun to work on 062!

Image

And then a new guy named Dick stopped by and asked if he could help. Dick said he was an ex Air Force F-4 and F-101 fire control tech and then had 32 years in United Airlines doing avionics.

Um, yes Dick, you can help. I have been wanting a good electrical guy for so long as we have so many cool electrical projects to do. My mind was spinning of what to put our new electrical guy on-radios, radar, turret, interphone...all in good time. Right now we need to work on the more essential items. Okay spinning mind, in the essential list of electrical projects which one should I put our new electrical guy on? How about landing gear. That's gotta be high on the priority list right?

One of our first projects to take care of is the tail gear. Just before the last flight of 2012 we made the tail gear retract again for the first time in probably 30 years just before we flew to the Nut Tree air show. On the way there the tail gear didn't make it all the way up but thankfully it did come all the way down and lock. We also had the position switch stop working on the way over. The tail gear and the position system worked nicely on the ground but in flight it was a different story so I asked Dick to dive into troubleshooting the position switches and he did just that.

Image

He found a bad microswitch and we just happened to have a new old stock replacement in the microswitch drawer. See, all those decades of collection crap pays off, right? Anyway...Thanks for tackling the tail gear switch problem Dick. We hope that you will come back again and again and again etc in perpetuity. oh please oh please!!!

Then Scott showed up and since he is a gear head who builds classic Mustangs (Ford built four wheel types) we put him on the oil leaks in the left engine. Scott is also a military vehicle nut who has many cool old WWII vehicles like half tracks, bomb trucks etc. He also finds cool stuff for us too.

Scott found some bad rocker cover gaskets on the left engine and he fixed those up in no time. Scott also adjusted some of the Dzus springs on the cowling because some of our brand new fasteners are too tight. Thanks Scott!

Image

Yes it is that much fun to work on ol' 062!

Image

Then two more guys showed up to help; Matthew and his Uncle Roland. Since they were a good pair we put them on two man projects. The first was replacing the loop antenna for the ARN-7 radio compass. The old antenna was incomplete and I found a good one that should be operational as well. The guys also started another two man project replacing the fixed glass just aft of the sliding windows in the cockpit but sadly I didn't get any photos of that project.

Thanks for coming out!

Out with the old...

Image

Image

And in with the new... Old, new, it's all relative I suppose.

Image

It was a great day for the Harpoon as we all got a lot done on the old gal. We are doing the same thing next Saturday so come on out!

We also still need some folks to help us get to Oshkosh this year. Our museum cannot afford to take her there on our tiny bank account to we have to rely on sponsorship and donations to the museum to make something like this happen. For a $5000 tax deductible donation to the museum you can come along with the Harpoon crew or sponsor a hard working volunteer to go to the greatest air show on the planet and another air show that is looking like it will be a real good one too. For your sponsorship or donation you can have a free ride to OSH in the Harpoon or let someone else go. The funds pay for accommodations in a great house that is like a resort in itself. It has two lakes, one for fishing and one with a beach for boating and swimming. The house is very large and is built into a hill to it is mostly underground and yet still has windows all around. Its a great place to stay.

We have made this trek to OSH for over decades usually in the Beech 18 and a couple of times in the B-25 but this year is our first time in the PV-2. We are hoping that it is anyway as we still need three to four more donors/sponsors to make it happen. The PV-2 burns 600 gallons of fuel per hour on takeoff and about 170 GPH in cruise not to mention lots of oil so needless to say it is real expensive to make this trip and the only way we can do this is with donations to the museum.

If you want to actually fly the Harpoon then you will also receive PV-2 dual flight instruction time by me, as your instructor, and I will gladly sign off that flight instruction in your log book. If you have a multi engine license then you can log second in command time too and can learn the takeoff and landings from the right seat. It is the cheapest heavy twin tail wheel time you can get as we will fly at least 20 hours of flying time from California to OSH and back.

Every year that we do this it is a wonderful trip, at least that is what our previous passengers have said, and this year it will be even more special in the Harpoon. We are also planning on stopping at Topeka, KS on the way home for their warbird show that promises to be a good one. The best part of this is that we will be able to meet up and fly with the only other flying Harpoons in the world. I hope we can fly a three ship together as that would be magnificent.

Please spread the word about our trip to OSH and Topeka so we can raise the funds to get the Harpoon there. For your donation to the museum you can come along for an amazing trip, or help a volunteer to have their trip of a lifetime, and not only see two great shows but you will get to see the USA from a unique and wonderful perspective as well.

Try your hand at navigating us across the USA at the nav table and plot the course and calculate our position with the WWII gear.

Sit in the top turret and watch out for enemy aircraft as you are our TCAS (traffic collision avoidance system) WWII style!

Lay down in the tunnel gun position and watch the countryside go by.

Are you a HAM operator or an aspiring radio operator? Sit at the radio ops station and tune in and communicate with people as we fly across the country. (Ken you better get that ham license). Maybe we can get the ARN-7 radio compass running by then and then use it to help the navigator with position fixes as we go.

If we make it to OSH we hope to see as many Harpoon veterans as possible so if you know of any please tell them that we hope to meet them either at OSH/Topeka or on our fuel stop(s) on the way. We will post that information as we get closer to the trip becoming assured.

Thanks for your help in spreading the word. This trip is going to be very special indeed.

Here are some photos taken on the way to the Nut Tree show last year. You can see our tail wheel that was a little too shy to be fully tucked away up in its well. Maybe it was just not used to the dark?

These great shots were taken by Eric Preston. Thanks for the prints Eric. These shots also show what the trip will be like on the way to OSH. Let's go!

We painted the Harpoon in accordance with the period specs from the Navy SR-2 which called for the horizontal surfaces of the wings and horizontal stabilizer to be painted semi gloss and the other surfaces to be painted lusterless or flat. This shot shows that we achieved the specified finish. Check out the slight semi gloss sheen on the wings and horizontal and yet the fuselage and nacelles are nice and flat. Pretty cool!

Here is a video that my youngest daughter shot on our way to the Nut Tree Mustang Days show last October. It was her first air to air and since the still photographers hogged the open escape hatch she shot this through the plexiglas side windows.

It's raw, unedited air to air having fun playing around Jerry flying our Beech C-45H.

To our Friends of the Hot Stuff crew. I am so sorry it took so long for me to crank this stuff out for you but I am almost there. I made the three of the four tunnel gun glass that you asked for. I ran out of polycarbonate and TAP plastics is closed on Sundays. Ill pick up some more tomorrow and make the last pane.

Just for proof here is a shot of the three I just finished.

Image

Made with the royal blue tint just as you ordered!

Image

My plexiglas disclaimer: The mold was made to the glass that came from our PV-2 and it fit our bird well. It should be the same as yours but will likely need some trimming to fit your frames. There also may be curvature issues that should not be a problem but if it is let me know and I will make it right. I held them up to the glass on our tunner gun area and the contours seem right so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Once again I am sorry this has taken so long to make this for you. I have not been able to work on our Harpoon for a long time due to pressing business crud so it was very nice to have a Harpoon weekend. It was long overdue.

Thanks, Taigh! They look great and I can't wait to see them installed on Hot Stuff! I'll get some pictures when that happens. Things are looking good on 062. Congratulations to you and your crew on all of your hard work.

Last Saturday we had our second official work day of 2013 and the turnout was very good.

The Sea Scouts showed up in force and helped to clean the landing gear wells and bomb bay.

Thanks guys and gal for helping to fix up 062. You all did a great job.

Image

Ken shows up with a relative named Danny. Danny is a diesel machanic and although he was there to work on the PV-2 he gravitated toward the AAF C-2 Wrecker truck.

The wrecker truck has been a bit sickly lately like it was starving for fuel. I cleaned the carb bowl and fuel strainer and saw some strange looking fibers. I checked the fuel tank (one of two 50 gallon tanks!) and I found something in the bottom of the tank. It turns out that a long time ago someone had dropped a rubber radiator like hose in the tank and it was all swollen up and falling apart. When I tried to remove it it just disintegrated so the tank needed to come out to turn it over and flush it out. Danny did just that and got her all fixed up.

Here is Ken and Danny fixing the tank which is important because we are going to need to use the wrecker truck to lift the tail of the Harpoon. Well done guys!

Image

Then Matthew and Roland came by again. Now we certainly like volunteers but we especially like volunteers that keep coming back!

Matt and Roland started up where they left off by working on the fixed glass on the sides of the cockpit/radio room. They removed the old glass and frames then cleaned and primed the inside of the frames and wells. I made new glass for them and we installed the left side glass. Hopefully my daughter and I will finish the right side tonight.

Thanks guys!

Image

On Sunday I was here alone tinkering on the Harpoon. It was one of those rare days where I am not running around providing tech support and help to the masses working. Nice and quiet, enjoying another great episode of Car Talk, and working on whatever comes to mind. One of the projects of the day was to replace the worn out Airloc fasteners found on the oil cap covers and other access panels. Lots of Dzus fasteners all over this Lockheed and a bunch of Airloc too.

I was lucky as I found a cool stash of Airloc fasteners of all of the sizes I needed for an awesome price. Pins too! AC Spruce sells the pins (milspec made) for almost a buck a piece! The studs are 4 to $7 each too but are new production stainless steel.

The fasteners I found are actually Lockheed surplus dated 1958 (the same year our Harpoon was sold as surplus) from an old Navy contract. too cool finding new old stock hardware, made for Lockheed and at a great price. Your donation money is being well spent!

Image

Image

Here is one access panel with the new fasteners installed

Image

Image

The colorful electrical panel in the background is one I picked up from Joe to replace our crusty and very modified one. It is the main control panel that sits between the pilots seats and has control switches and lights for everything from batteries and generators to oil and fuel transfer and even armament. This panel is all stock with the great coloring still in place. A cool future project...

Speaking of volunteers coming back guess who just walked in the door? Dick, our newest bestest electrical guy! Outstanding as this means we didn't chase him off last saturday!

Dick got back to work on the tail gear limit switch and selsyn troubleshooting. last Saturday he replaced a bad up indicator switch and today it looks like the down limit switch is working but the selsyn appears to be inop.

The gear and flap indicator system uses a selsyn to indicate the sweep or actual position of each landing gear and the flaps while they are in transit. For the gear system when the main or tail gear are in the up or down and locked position a microswitch is depressed and the indicator in the instrument moves to the extreme position indication either fully up or down. The tail gear up and down switches work but the position in between is not working. A new selsyn was ordered and will be here tomorrow.

Here is a shot (without Dick) of the tail hoisted up by the wrecker truck and with a tripod jack in place for safety.

Image

Dick is also coming back on Wednesday. I am giddy about having a regular electrical guy around. Any regular help is wonderous!

Progress, even a little at a time, is awesome.

With Bomber Camp and lots of other stuff going on I have been neglectful in my reporting on the Harpoon progress. Just because I haven't written much lately doesn't mean that we haven't been working on the old gal. Quite the contrary.

First an announcement. We are confirmed for heading to Oshkosh and Topeka. We have received just about enough donations to the museum to be able to announce that WE ARE GOING!

I have been reluctant to get excited about this until we knew for sure because it is hard to get the hopes up only to have to retract those feelings. Well the feelings are down and locked now and I am officially excited about the upcoming trip. I am also in freak out mode thinking about all that we need to do to make the trip happen. Lots to do...

Here are a few images of the recent work we have accomplished on 062:

Radio Mark has been wiring up the ARC-5 set. Lots of wiring and fabrication of the junction boxes. Here he is under the nav station where the ARC-5 main J box resides

The drawing of the J box and the wiring needed to make it work

Here is Dick finishing up the tail gear position and limit switch rework. We had a bad position transmitter and switch so we found replacements and Dick fixed it right up. It works beautifully now.

There is an inspection door on the left side of the nose under the cockpit that had been modified back in the early tanker days. The first retardant tank installed had cut across this panel and they installed a hinge in the middle so they could get to the accumulators. I made a new panel for it when I was replacing the Airloc fasteners and cleaned and painted the wells. We should have cleaned all of the areas under all of the inspection panels before we painted the aircraft but time constraints didn't allow for the perfect painting scenario. As with the rest of the project as the need arises the various areas receive the attention.

Next was the fuel control panel. The placards are long gone and as you can see the whole thing needed a serious makeover.

My wonderfully talented daughter Maggie does the artwork and can take any placard and put it in the computer. Once the artwork and separations are done we have a few choices for reproduction. The originals are chemically etched metal placards and we will do that someday when I can justify the expenditure. For now we will have to do with a decal. It gets the job done anyway.

As you can see I altered the placards to include the fuel quantities. The blueprints showed the quantities which I liked even though our original placards didn't have them. Another gross deviation!

A few more clips are needed for the fuel valve handles as a few were broken.

As our motto goes: You should have seen it before we started...

The Arizona gang wanted to pitch in on the Harpoon so they did just that. Here are Scott and Mark (fellow WIXer's) who are fixing up the tail gear. They have taken apart the collar where the upper fork attaches and they replaced the bushing and adjusted it. They also fixed the tail wheel lock mechanism so it works great. Well done guys!

Check out Scott's awesome tool box. It is a work of art in my book

Then we did a full gear swing to be sure the tail gear worked with the rest of the system and it did.

We were preparing for our first flight of 2013 for a Memorial Day flyover of a great Veterans Day celebration in Manteca. Time to wash the old gal as she was pretty dirty. Sure wish we could afford a hangar.

I didn't get any good shots of the flight or the Harpoon out on the ramp looking good. Oh well, next time.

As I mentioned earlier we are really excited to go to OSH. We are leaving Stockton on July 28th and if all goes according to plan we will have one fuel stop on the way. We hope to arrive at OSH that day before the airfield closes.

We will enjoy OSH until Friday August 2nd when we will depart for Topeka. It looks like we will head home from Topeka on Monday August 5th.

We are planning on flying a three ship with Hot Stuff and Attu Warrior both Saturday and Sunday if they are willing to do so. What an opportunity to see all of the flying PV-2's together at one place and one time. Not sure when this will ever happen again.

We still have room for one more on this trip so if you know anyone who would like to make a donation to the museum to sponsor a volunteer to go or for the donor to go along themselves please let us know. It truly is going to be a wonderful trip.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are scheduled for Warbirds in Review at OSH for Thursday at 10am. I am in need of several PV-2 veterans to join us and give a talk about their Harpoon experiences. We are having trouble finding PV-2 vets so if you know of any, especially somewhere close to OSH, please have them get in touch with us. Sadly, it is getting so hard to find these guys so please ask around so we can get them back inside of 062 and let them share their stories with the people at OSH. We will bring a table and chairs so they can park under the wing and hang out and talk to the public while we are there.

Even if they cannot make it to OSH we still want to talk to them.

Thanks in advance for your help with this.
