caf looking for new headquarters

This was previously sent out to CAF members but was not included in the initial press release. I asked if we could add this information for non-members. I must say some of you are trying to read too much between the lines.

You guys crack me up! Guess I just have to yield to your greater insight. Anyone headed to the Hondo, Tx show this Saturday? Weather and old planes, in this case a T-28A from the High Sky Wing, allowing, I'll be there with some friends. All the best.

If they truely want to reach more people to educate, the only choice is Kissimmee, Florida. It's right next to DisneyWorld, and people from all over the world come there as a result. None of the other locations mentioned come close to the worldwide traffic Central Florida has already. Kissimmee Airport started life as an Army Air Corp field and thus has an actual historical background to it. Depending on how much hanger space is needed, there are some good size ones open right now. Kermit's Fantasy of Flight is down the road another 40 or so miles; top that with Stallion 51 and Warbird Adventures on the field already- and you have at least a working knowledge of Warbirds in place already. And I am certain I know at least one A & P who would welcome working on their collection. My name is...er....his name is....

All this talk of the CAF just made a topic pop up in my head. Why in the world do they call it AIRSHO? I absolutely hate and am a little ashamed that they removed the W from "airshow". I don't care where they move as long as one of them takes a spelling lesson. Maybe they could repackage the name with some " L.A. gang style" spray paint graffiti letters to make it even more trendy. I seriously STOPPED going to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as soon as they went corporate and named it Rodeo Houston. Now the T.V. and radio announcers just call it RODEO and it turns my stomach. The CAF spelling of the word airshow makes them sound like a corporate heartless mess just like so many others that went "corporate". I hope they stay in Texas, but ya'll better ad that W back on the end of Airshow. I'm still not that happy about their name change to CAF either.

The hurricanes will help to keep them flying with or without engines too. The salty sultry air of Florida will help to lighten those heavy old airplanes via corrosion. We will be able to watch as the pounds just flake off the airframes.

and only the occaisional wildfire, which if timed correctly, could be a nice supplement to the CAF airshow.

It has been airsho (no W at the end) since 73 or 74 and was a copyrighted around 82. I believe the spelling came from the CAF attending Transpo 72 at Dulles Airport. Where ever the spelling came from it is a tradition of the CAF. Sadly it is one of the last traditions the CAF still has. I hope it doesn't go away. Much like everybody calls a cotton swab a Q-tip, nearly everyone involved with it refers to Midland (and Harlingen in the past) as just "Airsho". Its like saying you want a Coke when you really mean Dr. Pepper

As a side note, I grew up thinking that was the way airshow was written. I had seen it in print all my life like that and just assumed it was proper. In the sixth grade I had to write a paper and I did it over the CAF. I spelled airsho the way the CAF spelled it and my teacher counted off for it. I argued about the way it was spelled and she gave me a zero. It took my mama going up to the school the next morning with a copy of the Airsho84 program and talking to that old hag before she gave me a passing grade.

Now that is funny. It also proves my point about spelling. Most kids today think the plural version of a "brat" is BRATZ after the toy and that most plural forms of a word ends in a "Z" not an "S". Misspelling Airsho at a formal event just adds to the "dumbing of America". Enough of my Airsho rant. I would still like to see the CAF stay somewhere in Texas just because.

By that way of thinking they should be just fine where they are in Midland. I-20 runs right by the place!

DFW Area hands down.

Alliance - Huge airport/huge lots of undeveloped land surrounding said airport. Interstate Access. Big Race Track close by. Hillwood aka Ross Perot Jr. aka Aviation nut that can pull strings for CAF if this is the case.

McKinney - Easy Access from highway. Airport with land available for expansion. Really close to Dallas/Ft. Worth Area. Hop/skip/jump from Addison.

Denton - Previously been discussed - could be a target again.

Not Addison - not enough space - and with city voting down the establishment of an air museum at the tax payers’ expense - maybe the one there is looking to move too? Just speculation on my part.

Not Dallas Love - too congested to get to/City of Dallas/ 'nuff said.

You have North Texas Regional (Perrin field/kgyi) up (not too far away) north for cheap(er) gas and training area.

With DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field close by. You have a place where people from all over the world can fly into (nonstop in most cases) and get to the super air base with no problem. The DFW climate would not be as hard on the aircraft as other areas close to salt water (one of the big reasons the move to Midland was pitched).

It takes a lot of cash to hire someone like Jones Lang LaSalle unless they have a deal for nonprofits - consultants - oh I should have been one - I could be rich and spend all my money on warbirds!

I don't see why/how the CAF could move it's national offices to a large metropolotian airport and still keep AirSho in Midland? Why? Why fly all your airplanes from the Super Air Base to the "Museum" every year? Why continue to support and fund the traditional "AirSho" in a city where the National HQ isn't going to be? It doesn't make sense - unless it's just to appease the City of Midland for the time being.

One cannot help but question the true intentions of this move - the CAF is more famously known by it's EX members in making them mad and upset - because they believed they were betray'd and misled. I believe that Mr. Brown and the past few General Staff have saved the Organization from financial ruin.
