Nice copywrited story in my Sunday morning paper ( with color photos) about John Luckadoo a 91 year old B-17 pilot from the 100th taking a birthday ride with you guys in Dallas for the first time in 68 years.

The move to Denton was only around 30 miles so Frank and I launched as a flight...pretty epic day. Once we were clear of the Class b airspace he said go to trail and follow me...well he started into a climb and left me in the dust. This was a graphic reminder of how superior this machine is to anything we had. The backseat photos are courtesy of Lisa Toll.

Sorry Lynn, I ended up staying...we are in the Dallas area for awhile, stop and say hello!

I remember talking to some of the DVHAA museum guys when it was here in Willow Grove.....we got talking about it, and somehow it came out that those are some type of tractor tires that were on it (which apparently are still). This was years ago, but I recall them basically saying that the originals were not useable, and then it was kind of like a whew, we're done...doh! we forgot the tires! So they put those on there just till they could get correct ones. However, since the NAVY was stepping in and it was pretty much a forgone conclusion they were going to lose the plane, I guess they never went forward with getting the correct tires for it.

Be interesting to hear your comments regarding the D in comparison to your regular ride (maybe you need to slap a bumper sticker on the tail that sez "My other Mustang is a D").

I keep wondering this: why's everyone got flaps out? Seems like the Jet should be the one struggling to go slow while everyone else is cleaned up and cookin' along, though it ain't like I pretend to know caca about formations with 262's in 'em................

I was lucky enough to hop a ride in that Mustang out of Geneseo many years ago.

I'd suggest that the flaps are out 'cause everyone has to go the speed of the B-24.

The flaps are out so that the formation can keep up with the slowest aircraft of the group - the B-24. They are probably at about 150 knots or so at most, so even the P-51's need a bit of flap. The Me-262 needs lots of flap (and slat) at those speeds.
