The Collings Foundation now has 2 Fw-190's? Where are the Hellcat and the Fw-190(s) being restored? Thanks

The Hellcat is at American Aero Services in New Smyrna Beach. The FW-190 projects (formerly with the White 1 Foundation) are also mostly at American Aero Services. The 1 FW-190 fuselage is with Gosshawk in Arizona, and there are several other subcontractors for engines/props and so forth, but they will all come together at American Aero Services once the Hellcat is complete.

Not that I am an expert, but I wouldn't see the two 190's doing any major tour. Maybe we will get lucky to see them at a few big air shows, But I wouldn't think that it would be cost effective to travel with two aircraft with such rare power plants. I mean how much does the FHC 190 fly with her BMW power plant? Much less to travel the country with it. And for that matter, a Jumo powered D. In my opinion I would see those two aircraft being based at the Collings Foundation headquarters. Just my 3 cents worth though. Would be sweet to see all the Collings touring birds at Jerry's :)

Isn't the T.B.O. for the DB60x engines in operation close to 100 hours before an expensive rebuild? If the BMWs are similar, then I doubt that we would see the Fw190 on any tour unless it comes on a truck.

Hi Dora Nine,
this is what I posted on another thread before. In addition, the original poster who answered my question, is involved with Bf 109 restoration and maintenance in Germany professionally , so this information is trustworthy IMHO.

"I posted a question on a German aviationforum. regarding TBO´s of DB engines. A forumite, "78587?", involved with "Messerschmitt Foundation", wrote the following:

Part Overhaul: every 100 Hours, Main Overhaul: every 200 Hours, maximum lifetime: 600 Hours, as by the original DB-documents and (original) approval by German aviation authorities.

Michael"

He wrote, that an additional recondition of the engine might be ok, "if" the relevant parameter are in tolerance with the original DB specifications. But this would involve some additional major extensive (and expensive) work.

Michael

The single seat Collings aircraft do not tour. They will do airshow appearances to help support thier expenses. Colling aircraft are restored to fly and are flown regularly, I can imagine the FW will be flown and displayed regularly. The absolute worst thing you can do to an airplane is let it sit. Any airplane. The Storch on tour? Hah, 1. It's slow 2. It's slow 3. It's slow. There is also a shortage of available competent tail wheel pilots.

Well the Storch could tour all of Ma. in a few short months. I do not think any tailwheel airplane will prepare one for the Storch.(except the L-1) It flies and handles like nothing else.

Not to get too off-topic, but what's the status of the TBM? I remember seeing pictures of it at a lot of airshows in the past, but don't recall having seen any in the last five years or so. I may just not be paying close enough attention though...

Not great for sure. Beside the aformentioned SLOW!! it is uncomfortable as heck for any pilot over about 5'5" tall. No seat or pedal adjustment. Probably the worst trait is in windy conditions the huge stick will beat your knees to death. The large ailerons act like barn doors and swing side to side and it becomes a no kidding both hands on the stick airplane.
My longest trip...San Antonio to Midland one month!
