This is perhaps the kindest and most gentle way to put this. There will be a time to examine what happened, and try to learn from it; but for now, the family and the warbird community needs time to grieve and begin the healing process.

What a terrible loss. Though I've been to his shop, I never actually met him in person, but I found this video of him in a Shrike to be very moving, especially at the end:

Wonderful video and the choice of music is so fitting. Very well done!

I was at the Fargo Air Show last August and watched Bob fly that routine. Amazing!! What a loss....... RIP Bob.

Vlado,

From the perspective of the cemetery, when the smoke went on, and the Shrike began the steady left climb Westward toward Heaven it was if Robert Odegaard were himself at the controls and headed straight into the hands of God. Their wasn't a dry eye below and we all had runny noses. It was the most emotional missing man I have ever seen. I just cannot tell you how heart moving and appreciated it was for the mourners.

Thank you!

Regards,
Lex Cralley

Wish we could have been there - couldn't work around non-refundable tickets to Reno at 6 this AM and a week of work already crammed into 3 days. Godspeed, Bob. Reno will seem pretty empty this year.

Gosh, I just learned of this tragic news this morning. What a loss. I met Bob briefly at AirVenture 2008 and after I gave him a photo of a Corsair, he grinned and said for me to climb up and sit in Race 57. He was busy as all get out that day, but he still took time to talk with me. I'll always remember him well...just like everyone else will.

I only got to hang out with him briefly, yet when the news hit I felt like I lost a close friend. I thought maybe I was being silly. Then I found out that is just the kind of guy he was along with Casey and the whole gang. They make you feel like old friends in just a short time.

Vlado,

Beautiful picture from inside the missing man formation. I was planning to drive down to Kindred from Winnipeg for the funeral, but had to cancel at the last minute. I was miserable all day because I couldn't get there, and I am still miserable and sad over the loss of Bob. I had the pleasure of flying with Gerry Beck (another tragedy) in his Avenger during one of our air shows in Winnipeg. Bob flew off our wing in Dazzling Donna. I will never forget that ride, nor will I ever forget Bob and Gerry. It will take a long time to get over this loss.
