Vought Retirees Club restorations

Sat Aug 25, 2012 2:25 pm

With the 'Flying Pancake' completed, and the VE-7 replica and F6U Pirate now at Pensacola, does anyone know what they are working on? Are they still doing the F4U for the New Orleans museum (and was the BuNo ever found for that one)?

The F4U went to New Orleans
F-8 went to New Hampshire.

Currently in work is the restoration of F7U-3 129565
and a replica of the O3U-3 is being built.

I can post photos of both projects if there is interest.

Thanks Photogator. Yes, photos are certainly of interest.

I assume the New Orleans museum has a storage site somewhere, as the F4U (and, incidentally, their previously-displayed Bf 109) was not on display when I visited there 2 weeks ago.

The F7U was under restoration at the Midway shop on North Island last year, is is now being restored by the Vought Retirees Club for display on the Midway?

These gentlemen are craftsmen and do an excellent job in their builds/restorations.

Well, Vought has moved out of that facility now I think. Not sure where the retirees went!

I don't know if they have anything still going on, but I did get to see the Flying Pancake on display at Frontiers of Flight in Dallas a few weeks ago. "Magnificent" is the word that immediately comes to mind!

The Cutlass is currently nearly finished and getting ready for shipment to USS Midway.
There it will be reassembled and finished out for display.

Here are a few more photos during the restoration:

I hope they find a new home as they also have this project to complete a tactical version of the Regulus missile.
This example was previously displayed in Hackensack, New Jersey.
