My first with Mr. Hoover was in about 1966 when I was selling ice cream at the Milwaukee Air Show (yeah back when it existed). Both the Mustang and Shrike. Friggin amazing. :supz: I gave him a well melted ice cream bar when we met later. Wow! What a hero!

Bob tells this story in the "Skyfire Video" about his life. If I remember correctly the stick froze just aft of nuetral and by using power he managed to successfully land...Capt. Obvious right?...but he tells the story sitting in an F-86 cockpit.

Knowing Bob's reputation I'm sure there is something in this story that's near factual but respectfully, I'd check this one out a bit.
Full back elevator on an 86 takeoff will deny rotation with the airplane in deep drag rise. Early application of too much pitch in an 86 on takeoff is a REAL newbie mistake that BOB would never have made.
Sounds to me like something went amiss with the stab well after rotation.

That works. Once in the air if the stab wasn't stuck too far past neutral you could do a delicate balancing act using power. It would be interesting to know just what the actual landing speed turned out to be in that situation.
Would take one hell of a good stick to pull this one off. Bob would be my first choice to be the guy to handle this one without bending the sheet metal too badly :-))

I had to chuckle watching Zachary's interview with Bob Hoover. Among all of the straight-faced retellings of aeronautical adventures, the two events he described with a big grin on his face both dealt with women.

I'm currently re-reading Bob's autobiography "Forever Flying" for the umpteenth time. It is one of my favorite aviation books and I find myself constantly re-reading it.
