Sat Jun 16, 2007 8:53 pm

Greetings
I was wondering if any body could tell me more info the three B-52 Bomber that were litterly Blown Apart in the late eightys at Carswell ?
I remember that I sadden by the fact the these great War Birds were shown on the local TV news being De Wing with one great blast  ! I grew up in the DFW area and always took comfort in knowing that BUFF was close by guarding our great nation 8) It was also a Sadd day the last B-52 flew out to Barkstos AFB in LA :( . I belive that they were B or C models that were blown up. Dose any body have more info or pictures of this event ?

One was also blown up at Dyess in the same time period. I've seen a TV clip of that destruction. I belive it hapened in the 1985-88 timeframe.
From what i was able to gather, the planes must have been unflyable so were destroyed on site rather than flown to AMARC. They had to be destroyed as part of a SALT treaty with the late and unlamented USSR.

I was stationed at CARSWELL AFB back in April of 1984 when these 3 hulks were blown up.

Baugher notes them here: http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1956.html

56-662
56-680
56-688

I've looked for footage of this event but haven't found any yet.

The parking for Carswell's 1985 open house was right in the area where the hulks were and I walked by them on the way in and on the way back to the car. For some reason I only photographed 680 and 688, but not 662. If memory serves me right JB is correct about the reasons.

"Where is your sergent son?"
"Blowed up! Sir!"

And then they repeatedly set them on fire for firefighter training....I last remember seeing the remains sometime @ 1990?

Yep....those are the ones. Thx Clifford! Ahhhh.....the good ole days.

A friend of mine knew a guy in avionics that would frequent the hulks and scavenge them for parts to use on our D's until they were replace with H's. He brought him a compass from the radar navs panel...should've got him to get me a souvenir too ;-)

Ztex is correct. The base fire department practiced on them frequently.

Thx again.
