Btw, SIC type ratings are nearly the same process as PIC and I'm sure that switching seats at this point is a non issue for him unless his insurance company says otherwise. Its not an airline environment and he probabily has ultimate responsibility for his own aircraft now, just not on paper. I'd give the guy some credit as he is an enthusiast like us, he just has the money.

Yes, I shouldn't have said "...captain in the left seat." "Captain aboard" would be more accurate.

Considering the 707 requires 3 crewmembers no matter what rules they're operating under (Part 91, Part 119, Part 121, Part 125, or Part 135), it's a mute point anyway. It's all about PF/PNF in the cockpit. John can fly as much as he likes as long as the PIC decides he's happy letting John be PF. :)
