Peter - It is actually a semi-gloss, but I imagine that after a few weeks in the desert sun it will take on a matt finish.

I got some painting done today, but as I got a late start I did not finish all that I wanted to. The camoflauge should be finished by the time I leave the museum tomorrow.

Thank you, both for carrying out that impressive work and also for keeping us up to date. I've long had a soft-spot for the F-84, and it has certainly been an under-appreciated type over the years. Like so many other kids of the 80s, my main interest was WW2-based, and the thirty-odd year-old Thunderjet held little appeal. As I've aged, my appreciation for the type has grown, and what was once the ugly classmate of the stylish Sabre is now a fascinating machine in its own right. It's a treat to see one getting a bit of TLC.

I follow your reports with interest.

Looking good!

I've always thought it might be fun to paint a 1/1 scale aircraft..due to cost and space I have to settle for 1/72. One thing I noticed in your artist's rendering though; the proportions of the insignia aren't quite correct. It's a little thing, but a pet peeve of mine on restored aircraft. When the bars were first added to the star-in-circle in the spring of 1943, a red surround was added to the entire insignia. This was changed to Insignia Blue after a few months, giving the insignia its current proportions (the red bar was added in 1947, but the proportions stayed the same.)

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This is the (incorrect) way the insignia is often painted..



And here's the correct way. The difference is subtle, but noticeable..



I don't mean to be a jerk or anything..if you're already aware of this, just tell me to shut up and crawl back under my rock.

Steve - You are absolutely correct in that many restorations get the national insignia wrong. We have had some discussions about the markings, some have wanted to take a shortcut and those of us doing the painting have been stuborn about getting the insignia correct. I will use the schematic in T.O. 1-1-4 to make sure it is correct.

Cool! I was hoping you just used the simplified version on the rendering for representational purposed. I know this forum has its share of flame wars over paint jobs, but my personal belief is that if it's being done for a museum or historical display it should be as accurate as possible.

This week has been a good one for painting! A little touch up and on to the markings. There are only three of us doing the work, so we be gettin' tired. (White areas on the tail are where I had to sand out some runs and that took the paint down to the primer.)
