This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Not at all, James! I am always willing to be educated. I wasn't aware of the 707 in Oz, but I'm glad to hear about it.

Try the veal, and don't forget to tip your waittress.
As for the QANTAS name thing, I was gently but firmly "corrected" by a member of the First Class cabin crew on a QANTAS 747-400 back in 2005 for not spelling it in all caps. So, I've continued to spell it that way. Maybe I should just write a nice letter to the airline and ask 'em how they want it written. Or maybe I should just go have a cold beer and forget the whole thing.

You could always spell it Kwantus, really urinate them off.

It is an education, isn't it. Wish it paid, too.

Wouldn't be the first time the first class air produced verbal rubbish.

I could ask the Qantas captain who's mowing the lawn outside, but I'm sure he
really doesn't care or know. If you have a look at the various bits of Qantas stuff online, you'll quickly see it's lower case capital letter name standard where you'd expect. Originally it was Q.A.N.T.A.S, and it's now caps on the aircraft and publicity, but not in plain text. Ask for a free ride for the attendant's error. And a beer they drink in Australia, not one of those export wee things.

I saw N88ZL in Dulles two years or so ago. It was stunning! Hopeful us it's still going strong. Keep us updated especially if you need extras to fly in it!

Shirley you're joking ?
That will never, ever fly again.
I don't know the current status of N88ZL, but N707SE seems to be a better prospect as it has flown at least once in 2011.
You can't trust the FAA register, there are countless airframes 'registered' which became beer cans years, sometimes decades, ago.
This looks to be quite a definitive list:

A quick little sidebar- It's too late for a CONVAIR 990 in flying condition. In Nov. of 2010 990 s/n 30-10-24, CV990-30A-5 N5612 (among others) the last 990 that could be made airworthy was cut up @ Mojave.

I saw N88ZL part way off the end of the runway in Hamilton Ontario back in 2006. The band Bon Jovi was on board and while landing on wet runway slid of the end! (Slippery when wet tour i guess was extended

)

So the rumor is that Sunday afternoon a 707 will be flying into FRG, with it's usual red/white paint scheme temporarily covered over with Pan Am colors. I guess the producers were able to look past the modifications? Or maybe the money was right?

yes and yes.

This has actually been a fun thread, so thanks to everyone who participated.
I really like the first and second generation jetliners...the 707's, 727's, 880's, 990's, even the 'Santa Monica Ant Eater's'. Loud, smokey, and cramped...but there was still some panache' and class.

http://www.onlocationvacations.com/2011 ... this-week/Hope the series lasts long enough for us to see it. Can the plane be flown with the vinyl wrap, or is it only for ground shots? Seems like if they could have had a second unit crew film a bunch of air-to-air shots they'd get enough stock footage to cut down on all the CGI stuff they've been using.

The fact that flying 707s are so rare makes me feel old. I figured there were more around than the few mentioned here.
Like many others, my first jet flight was in one, a Pan AM 707 in fact.
