Help us repaint our Stinson L-5!

Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:48 pm

Well, I've been threatening to do this for some time now, and now it is time to launch the effort. We'll be headed for Houston and the Wings Over Houston airshow tomorrow, and I went live this evening with our fundraising campaign.

I know many of you prefer historical paint schemes on our aircraft. Despite what some people may think having seen me fly a few very inaccurately painted birds, I vastly prefer them as well.

Here's an opportunity for you to help me help our squadron make this a reality on one of our aircraft.

Please click the following link to see it: http://www.indiegogo.com/Repaint-our-L- ... 759&i=addr

I'll be more than happy to keep y'all up to date with whatever progress we are able to make.

BTW, we've been talking about this for a while. Here is a previous related thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=42845

OK, Ryan, as someone else who thinks it's worth trying to get schemes right (and much as I like your Stinson's current "mixed grill" scheme) put me down for $50 Australian (currently $51 of those funny green things) and all the smart-alec remarks about accuracy you can handle when it's done.

 Thanks James! I think this could be fun. Hopefully I'll get some interesting pictures to share with y'all today.

Ryan, do you have a snail mail address we can send a donation to?

Nice initiative.

I will search in my files if I could find some nice L-5 orginal markings ideas.

I really like the school-bought planes. There were quite a few of them bought by Detroit-area school children via war bond stamps. They went everywhere. The 14th Liaison Squadron had one from the Maire School in Grosse Point MI. It was flown by a member of the squadron who was from the same town. It was not by design, he just went to pick up a new airplane....

Well, the old girl held up well for a day at Wings Over Houston. Got home just before dark and buttoned her up before coming home.

Actually you have quite a few military marking schemes choices for the L-5. Primarily because it was one of the few fixed wing A/C to be operated by all five services.

WWII era: USMC, USAAF and possibly USN.

Post WWII:
USAF -ARS markings (W.T Larkins a few photos he took at Hamilton AFB)
USCG - Operated out of CGAS Elizabeth City (use?)
USN - Wrap -around midnight blue with base name on the tail in white Both"Moffett Field" and "Point Mugu" usage
USMC - Some with OD (Korea) and others in wrap around dark blue (re: VMO -1 @ MCAS Cherry Point w/ LR on tail)
USArmy- I have yet to see a post 1947 photo of L-5 with verbiage "ARMY" displayed

Mike,

I briefly saw those photos on my phone in tiny version and now do not... I am interested in seeing them on my computer.

JDK,
It doesn't count, because it's less than 450 horsepower. All those experts have more Testor's paint bottles to memorize... they don't have time for this child's stuff!

Well, we've gone just over a week so far and raised about $200. Thanks to everyone that has helped so far. I guess at this rate the plane's paint scheme is likely to remain longer than I thought it might. We're serious about the effort guys!
Also, if you are at Randolph AFB on Saturday, make sure to stop by and look. Feel free to ask about sitting in the cockpit, too.
