When the XB-70 came back from this flight to 3+ as you can see, lots of the white paint was burned or flexed off. What you may not know is AV 1 was covered with patches on the upper surfaces from FOD damage. Mechanics would step onto the airplane to perform assembly jobs while building the aircraft and the drilled out buck tails from fasteners along with pebbles stuck in their shoe soles would puncture the very thin outer skin of the honeycombed stainless steel skins. The engineering fix was to fill the void with epoxy and then bond a 125% bigger than the hole patch over the hole since there was no access to the underside and the sheets were thinner that a razor blade. Pretty soon there were patches overlapping patches all over the upper surfaces until N.A. enacted a policy of no bare shoe soles allowed on the airframe! This made everyone have to wear 'suicide socks' on the airplane (suicide socks are 50/50 cotton & man made fiber shoe covers kind of like surgery suite shoe covers that are slicker than the guy selling Ginsu knives @ the State Fair, more than one poor individual has slipped off a wing or stabilizer while wearing them, next stop, the cement many feet below but maybe you'll be lucky enough to ricochet off a stand or two on your way down).
So, @ 3+ the patches pretty much all got hot enough on the flight that the glue failed and the patches came off, you might find one if you hike around in the Mojave desert.

And B-57's starting up would freak out brand new base fire fighters or the firemen on a base that an airplane was transient on, and they'd race over to 'put out the burning airplane' only to make real enemies out of the crew.

The A-7's are my heritage!! I'm a 171st ARW KC-135 Crew Chief on drill weekends, PA ANG in Pittsburgh. The 171st at one time was the 112th before we got the tankers.....long before I enlisted though!
Thanks for posting all the pics!!!!

Very cool. I like the shot of the Army anti-submarine B-24- a subject that seems to be extremely undercovered in books.
