I was thinking more the placement on the P-51s with the 325th stripes inboard while the 31st had a center stripe.

Not the 38s as recognition wasn't a big issues

sadly they didn't help Ernie Shipman who was shot down by a P-38J!!!

The inboard stripe was the earlier version. Look at photos of Ina the Macon Belle, either real or restored. it's got the stripe in the same spot. I do believe you are correct about the original photo being a former 31st bird now though

And you know those 38 guys. Anything single engine was a target!

Didn't Cowboy Megura of the 4th get shot up by a 38 prior to his having to set his Mustang down in Sweden?
