Russian trainer L-29 tail section found in junk yard today

Aircraft aluminum usually brings a lower price @ the recyclers yard because of all the alloy material in it, recyclers prefer pop and beer cans as they are 100% aluminum and can be smelted more easily.

The airframe was recovered in Florida. It had been inundated by saltwater from a hurricane storm surge. Nothing, apparently, was done to it and it just sat and corroded. It was was brought back to Houston recently and an operation commenced to strip it of all salvageable , reusable parts to support a couple of other local L-29s. As an airframe, I understand that it was pretty much gone, given the price of flyable L-29s. The wings are being repaired.

It is not and never has had any affiliation with the Collings Foundation. One of the guys involved is an occasional CF volunteer and has a flyable L-29.

Being flooded by salt water would explain the corrosion. Thank you for the explanation. I'll make sure that what little is left of it lives on as an interesting art piece.

IIRC, there was an L-29 based at Covey Trails, in far West Houston.

It landed at the Brookshire International Air Travel Connecting Hub (Air & Space Port) grass strip a couple of years back, for the local EAA chapter open house.

Very cool Jason. I look forward to seeing what you do with it as a "MiG".

It would be cool to paint your truck up as a USAF truck and just haul the tail section around to car shows.

I was thinking that might be a fun and simple thing to do to the truck as well. The truck could be made to look like it just picked up the captured remains of some top secret Russian plane. My old Chevrolet truck is rough and rugged but it is fairly mechanically sound.
