Maybe a Dean Hess ROK tribute scheme?

First of all, glad to hear that red nosed, blue nosed and red/ yellow checkers are out. They
are well represented!
If you're looking for 8th AF examples, what about these, from groups not regularly seen:

John B Lee's "Geronimo", 20th FG.

Ed Pogue's “Chattanooga Choo Choo”, 20th FG.

While talking to General Strait at WW2 Weekend, he wishes someone would replicate his "Jersey Jerk". The nice thing about this is he is still alive (at 93) and I think would be a great honor.

I'm going to go out on a wing here and pose this question:
I assume you've checked the provenance of this particular airframe and found nothing inspirational there?
I'm definitely in the camp of searching the provenance of a plane first, followed by representative examples second. Just wondering if an original historical scheme unique to the aircraft was considered.

Joe T.'s "Crusader" is a hybrid Korea scheme. It was originally a pretty good one, but he had to add the racing numbers for Reno which makes it a "hybrid" although I think the numbers may be removable.

I like that 355th for an ETO scheme.
I also like the Iwo suggestions.
506th FG

15th FG

I don't think there are any CBI Mustangs currently. I am also partial to the 23rd FG.

Lewis Shaw's P-51 is in a full Korea scheme
It carries the basic AF markings of the period but has the tail badge states Webb AFB.
Mustang unit marking in Korea were very colorful! 39th or 40 FIS blinker nose markings would look great!!
Joe T.'s "Crusader" is a hybrid Korea scheme.
It carries some of the previous 72nd FS markings, the 50s era FF code and
80th FBS sqd F-80/86 tail flash. Very hybrid

Heresy !
The first few times I went to Rockford/Oshkosh there wasn't a military schemed P-51 in sight, and mighty pretty they looked in civil dress too. Unfortunately that would be regarded today as
passe if not downright
gauche.
As I illustrated above, a military scheme doesn't
have to be another same-old bare metal or olive drab.
