Trip to Hawaii

I will be traveling to Hawaii May 1 - 15. I have meetings with PAM scheduled but beyond that and Pearl Harbor, what should I be looking for? Any Wixers want to grab a beer or point out the unusual sights give me a shout.

About 15 years ago we wandered up to Haliewa on the North Shore of Oahu and found Dillingham airstrip...which I BELIEVE is the auxiliary strip that Taylor and Welch may have taken off out of on Dec. 7th. Anyhow, there was what looked like the fuselage of a Grumman Duck sitting out back of one of the hangars. Not sure if it was real or a leftover from Tora Tora Tora or something...but I'd be interested to see if it's still out there.

You may wish to check out some of the former WWII military airfields in the area as they are fast disappearing. For example: MCAS Ewa, Kahuku AAB, Haliwa Fighter strip, Kualoa AAB. See http://www.airfields-freeman.com (Hawaii & Pacific Islands). BTW, Freeman is always loooking for current photos of the status of former fields to update his great database. Yes, you get photo credit!

I lived in Hawaii for over 20 years. there is a lot hidden in the jungles. I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have just send me a PM.
For correction, Taylor and Welch took off from Haleiwa Airfield. Mokuleia Airfield was the WWII name for Dillingham. The revetments still remain there from WWII. It is now mainly used by gliders.

When Bill and I were In Hawaii in January, the best thing we did was the Beaver D. H. ride all around Oahu, including seeing the Arizona from above. Bill also liked the new museum at Pearl Harbor. There may be glider rides at Dilingham.

Hawaii is amazing. So far 2 days of sun and steady rain and wind. At least I got to see some of the sights
Another week here, rain forecasted for the next 5 days. PAM is worth the visit alone. Great museum and people working there. Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you have time, visit the Missouri. My wife and I were there in Feb. and we took a tour of the Arizona memorial and the Missouri. We had been to the Arizona before but this was the first trip to The Missouri. The ship is in great condition and you get to stand on the surrender deck. No bags are allowed. No pocketbooks or camera bags. Take anything you need with you in your pockets.
