There should also be six windows on the upper fuselage, two before the wing and one aft. They might be painted over, but you could make out the outline of the window plates. I believe that you could also see them from the cargo deck as that area wasn't covered with insulation on the early C-130A models.

In the previous pic, I'm guessing the external tanks are removed - was this common on the A-model or were some A's delivered without those tanks?

Not common.

The ones I worked on had them removed (pylons) and bladders were installed in the inboard wings, like the B thru H models. We had eight A models known as "Rivet Victors". At one time a module was slid in the back and they were used to spy on Eastern Europe.

And one C-130 was shot down while on an intel mission.
There is an "A" painted up like that ship at the Intel Museum near Ft. Meade, MD
They flew it in during 1997 and retrofitted the correct three balded props.
