I didn't see it mentioned but appearantly this site and several others in Dec 2008 were acquired/assigned as part of the "World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument" by President Dubya. And accordingly will be administered by the National Park Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

So most likely this is a moot case.

I bet that Dubya's daddy. Sir George the first,having fought and flown in WWII. Just might have been more friendly to a group retrieving this pile of scrap(future beer cans).That window of opportunity has closed and my guess is that the patch of tundra that the B-24 sits on will be very rich in Iron and Aluminium for many hundreds of years.It's doomed to sit there forever

Doesn't seem to be the problem, though logistically that part of the planet is quite severe when it comes to weather so your window of extraction would probably be limited. But it seems this plane has more of a red tape issue than anything.

I'm sure tickling an ear of a major politician with ties to Alaska might be a good start, assuming they could be interested in such a project. I'm sure a good sales pitch could go a long way.

Debbie Corbett, regional archeologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which oversees these historical Aleutian areas, said the sites chosen for new national monument designation will help illustrate the overall story of the war in the Aleutians. And for pushing 70 years of exposure to the elements, she thinks the Atka B-24 is in relatively good shape.

Spencer, who'd like more than anything to see the plane brought in and restored, doesn't agree.

"It's really beginning to suffer," he said.

The muskeg is slowly swallowing the wreck. High winds have blown away parts and pieces. And then there are the souvenir hunters.

The late Kevin Bell, captain of the 120-foot Fish and Wildlife research vessel, the Tiglax, visited the crash site a couple of years ago and sent Spencer a series of photographs documenting its condition.

"I was shocked at the amount of looting that had taken place on the airplane," Spencer said. "They've chopped away the trailing edge of both wings. The propeller blade was extracted from one of (the) propeller hubs. Somebody also chopped off the left wing tip with a hatchet."

There's more, but you get the picture.

"Over the years I've watched this plane, there have been a number of attempts by people to salvage it," Spencer said. "There are a lot of dreamers out there in the war bird business. But it's a huge task dismantling it, taking (it) out, reassembling it, restoring it. It's a gigantic project that takes a lot of vision and a lot of money."

In the meantime, he's hopeful this new Valor of the Pacific National Monument designation will help protect the aging bomber.

"Even though it's been recognized as a historical object for three decades, I don't think any resources have been dedicated to preserving it. This really puts icing on its historical importance and hopefully resulting in some resources and action."

By law most wrecks on federal property are protected, even if it is in the small print of "historical artifacts" and this does nothing to deter everyone and anyone from taking a piece of crash sites home. The idea that making this a monument will help preserve it is a total joke. The only thing the designation is doing is preventing someone with the money and intent to recover and preserve it from doing so. Looters will not respect the site any more than before, after all what is 1 little piece and who will ever know?

I've visited a bunch of crash sites and most have been stripped of everything that could be carried off and most of these sits have protection by state or federal law. NO ONE CARES!

I'd like to see this aircraft saved or at least someone with the means a chance to consider recovering. If it is to much trouble or money to make it worth it than at least someone was given a shot to recover it. I bet someone would be willing to invest in the recovery.

I'd just like to go see it before it is recovered, That is an incredible site and location.

If theres people getting to it to take parts off, then it's possible to take the whole darn thing. If all of us had millions and millions, imagine what we could do..........
