I have hand-painted a number of squadron patches and two backs of A-2's and used regular Testors enamel. No prep work and no thinning. The result is great and they look like what they did in WWII. The best part is that the more the jacket is worn/ages, the painting on the back also obtains the "worn" look and makes it look even more authentic. The squadron patches are easy to do. Where I had the most difficulty was finding the correct thickness and texture of leather locally. Makes a difference when painting the leather. Both jackets I painted were Coopers.

I'm also a leather unit patch artist, I've used both oil based enamels and have started using acrylics and both work well on leather, I usually make mine like new as if they were just made by the unit artist , but have also had requests for "aged" types, what i usually do for these is make the patch then put a thinned "dirty wash" onto it , I spread it around hit/miss and it gives the patch a used/been there look .
