Warbird Information Exchange

I recently bought this panel. I was told it was from a Mustang that had raced at Reno. It was at the Lake In The Hills airshow in 2008 and had got a dent and so this panel had to be replaced. Based on the price I paid, I really don't care one way or the other if it's from a Mustang or not. But it would be nice to know for sure.

Looks all wrong to be a Mustang panel. Something radial maybe.

With the compound curve and what appears to be chem milled reliefs on the interior I would say from an airliner.
Any numbers visible under the paint?
Is the inside doubler reinforcement part of the base metal or is it a separate piece of metal?

I'd have to agree with Rich. The cutout visible at ground level looks like the corner of a cargo or passenger door cutout and the unpainted/previously sealed area could be where the doorsill doubler attached. The milling is very similar to what Boeing does on their modern airliners.

I think it looks like it's 1 piece. How can that be? I didn't notice any numbers, but I haven't put eyeball to metal either. I'll look more closely when I get home.

Airliner huh? Hahaha! I was skeptical that it was from a Mustang, but like I said, for the price, I really don't care what it's off of. It looked like a nice "canvas" for all that loads and loads of free time that constantly think I have...

Yep, Boeing (and the other manufacturer, I'm sure) uses milled skins all over the place. You ought to see the price tag on a replacement panel! Some are chem-milled, some with machines.

Yeah, that was the general plan. Although after trying to polish my C-47 cowling, the thought of trying to get that paint off and polishing that area makes me shudder!

You could enlarge the hole & turn it into an 'access panel"..(or just patch it) then drive short rivets into all the vacant holes. Scuff it with 220 on the DA, expoxy prime both sides, then Olive Green on the inside, silver on the outside, add nose art & hang on the wall.

Curvature of panel *could* pass for a B17 among the unknowing

I did a 2x3ft panel for a friend & it ended up with about 800 rivets in it...
