I've always (or seemingly so) knew of the group...and simply thought of it as a club for early (or older) pilots.
In other words, not a huge a big deal...
Pperhaps their secrecy has given it a bit of a cachet among younger pilots.

BTW: The recent Flying article was written tongue firmly in cheek...
