Hi folks,

I'm an absolute P-40 lover. Definitely in my top 5. That being said, I have been trying to find photographs of current P-40's that DO NOT have the sharks teeth paint scheme. I'm kind of tired of practically every example today having the uber-popular teeth.

Besides a couple examples in the southern hemisphere without the mouth, can anyone tell me where I can find a "stock painted" P-40? As in, something fresh from the factory kind-of-look? I suppose I'm just looking for a clean P-40.

If anyone's got too much time on their hands, maybe some statistics could be fun to play with. What percentage of currently flown and/or displayed P-40's have the sharks teeth versus current P-40's that don't. And of those with sharks teeth, how many of them actually carried sharks teeth during their WWII combat careers?

Peace,

David

The nearest to a 'stock' finish is probably Chris Prevost's at Sonoma

Other airworthy non-sharkmouth ones in the Northern hemisphere include Peter Teichman's P-40M at North Weald in the UK still in 'Red Tails' movie markings, Stephen Grey's ex-Pearl Harbor P-40B at Duxford, and Christian Amara's French-based P-40N in 49th FG markings. Then there's the Paul family's 'Parrothead', Kermit Weeks' TP-40N, Ron Fagen's P-40k in Burma colours, Vintage Wings of Canada's example, John Fallis' P-40N in 49th FG markings which was at Oshkosh last year, and I'm sure several others.

Off the top of my head the ones flying with no teeth would be TFC's C model, the French N, Kermit's TP-40N, VWoC N, Chris Prevost's N, John Fallis' N, Judy Pay's F, Garth Hogan's N, Paul Family N (Parrothead), Peter Teichman's M, and maybe one or two others in Australia that I'm not familiar with the owner of.

With teeth...CAF N, POF N, FHC C, Cavanaugh N, Fagen E and K, Tony Banta E, Jim Smith E, Paul Family E, Clyman M, Frasca E, Don Brooks' E, ex-OFMC E, Yagen E, Tom Blair's K, Allan Arthur's N, and then there's an unregistered one but airworthy in CA.

Check out the beautiful 1944 RNZAF repaint scheme that is being applied to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand's P-40E, on this thread.

David there's a P40 very close to you just over in Victoria - the Maude family P40. She's a real beauty.

The P-40 is my favorite! It is nice that some are being restored without the teeth.

Perhaps stating the obvious but seeing you blokes rattle off lists of airworthy P-40s really makes me reflect on how far the airworthy population has come in the past 20 years. Marvellous.

Funnily enough three of the non-toothy aircraft mentioned - Prevost, French N and the Vintage Wings of Canada Eddie Edwards tribute - were restored in the southern hemisphere (as you know). Despite Alan Arthur's aircraft and one in NZ, it would almost seem we have an aversion to teeth ... unless they're on Spitfires.

There are a couple of toothless P-40s below, and there is also Judy Pay's P-40F. No longer in Oz, but now in France is the P-40E Jeannie, which also has no teeth.

TFC's B (or is it a C?) doesn't have teeth.
