New Mustang in a Barn Yarn

I'm waiting for the MAAM guys to get there 61 flying so I can get mine out of the underground bunker and ruin there day. Just don't know weither to fly it in knots or MPH and when to put on the invasion stripes.

Do you have another bunker? I've been at 5C1 a bunch lately flying the Cub and still haven't found the old one.

And whatever happened to that Japanese Zero in a cave that popped up a while back? I suppose it's already been restored and flying, right? haha....

hmmm.... give us more info! Considering how many Mustangs survived the war, there's a good chance it could be a real story.

Ober that is soooo funny! You made my day. Just make sure you get at least 2 hours in the P-61 before you take her solo!

When doing my Multi Commercial Instrument at Kingman a bunch of years ago I spent some time at the airport Museum. The old guys in there tell a tale of a "big" surprise that was saved from scrapping and waiting to be brought to light. Can't help but wonder...

There are still discoveries going on every year. Remember the japanese camp found this week untouched since WW II? What about the Helldiver found in the reservoir last year outside of San Diego or the Me-109 brought up from the ocean floor and the Hellcat and Corsair in the last year.
I think when a few more Korean era and the last of the WW II guys pass on there are going to be some neat stuff surface . They are the the last of the Depression ERa generation that hoards things. I particularly expect a lot of the lighter aircraft to come out of the woodwork.

I heard tale of a P-6 fuselage that had been stored in a semi trailer in Jackson until the gentleman who owned it passed away. It was supposedly owned by Jack Taft, who also had a P-400 and a BT-14 so you never know, but until I see pics or see it in person, I'm going to remain very skeptical.

As far as this P-51 story goes, I would think that there would have been some sort of record somewhere that would be able to confirm it. There's gotta be some sort of paperwork that would involve a P-51 transferring from military to civilian ownership, no? Even if it was trucked or moved in some other way. It would be really cool if the story was true, but it seems to me there would have at least been some sort of evidence that it still existed before now.

Another good story seen here at WIX and other places last year was in regard to the ex- Ken Knight P-63 racer which ended up in a barn in Arkansas. I still wonder how many people suddenly made an Arkansas trek a part of their holiday last year?

Dick Phillips must have a cross-reference spreadsheet for paint schemes showing all the civil Mustangs that wore "baby blue with white stripy bolt thingys". If not, somebody maybe needs to photoshop create one like that, and put it on P-51 Who? on mustangsmustangs.


Oh, and T.J., why did you have to bring up the Knight P-63 again right when everybody was forgetting all about that unclaimed treasure? I was just planning my vacation, and don't like crowds.

I have dismissed several rumors that were just so unbelievable that I did not put a priority on them, and lived to regret it!

I heard about a junk yard full of radial engines and airframe parts outside of Macon GA. That was a huge mistake not check it out promptly. Does anyone remember how many gun turrets (B-17, B-24, B-25), and tons of NOS WWII parts (including complete engines) U.S. and Axis came out of that yard?

I was told about a WWII bomber fuselage (with a glass nose) in the trees at the end of a runway in South FL. "Surely it was a drug runners DC-4 with the nose cut off?" It was a PB4Y. I lost by not following up.

I could name many more of which I did not get there first. I will not just dismiss a story so quickly now. Many more WWII aircraft are out there. I have seen some myself.

Yes, there are still some around - my dad has seen the two dismantled BT-13s (one a Viceroy passenger conversion) in a Kentucky barn.
I've about given up on Earl's Buffalo. I'm concentrating on finding where the NMUSAF buried their Keystone B-6 remains!

The late Chuck Doyle was from Rosemount, Minnesota where I live. He spoke at my son's high school back in the late 90s. My son having gotten the warbird bug from his dad, talked to him afterwards and Mr. Doyle mentioned having a couple of unrestored Mustangs in his hanger. Naturally my son passed this on to me.

I never did get a chance to follow that one up. Considering what Mr. Doyle gave to the USAF Museum etc, it seemed plausible to me.
