Aero Space Museum of Calgary Robbed

Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:16 pm

Calgary Sun Article Here

An obvious outrage but my intent is not to shock/anger people or taint Albertans in any way. Just awareness in case any of you spot someone trying to sell items that were stolen.
The article says "The chances of catching the craven crew who violated the museum comes down to someone spotting the artifacts, and reporting their suspicions to police." I can't think of a better bunch of people that would know... thanks Wixers.

That is really sad news. I feel sorry for the people that did it because they are clearly very desperate.

I hope that the artifacts are returned unharmed.

Peace,

David

That's sad, what a bunch of scumbags.

One question - what is Canadian Tire money?

I love this statement, talking about Lancaster pilot Ken Brown:

"Brown was the type of man who’d gladly lend his boots to the kind of cowards who’d rob a war museum — he’d share his boot with the seat of their pants."

That is terrible, I suggest everyone forward the link to the article to other canadian and american museums. These would be good starting points. Additionally pawn shops and auction houses.

Canadian Tire money is a form of currency that is given back for each dollar spent at a Canadian Tire Store.
You can then use the money the same as cash back at the store.
Canadian Tire would be equivalent to ...hmmm...not sure if the US has anything like it?
They have it all except Lumber! And for those who's curiosity has the best of them.. http://www.canadiantire.ca/home.jsp?site=WebStore

Ah thanks Mike. I've never heard of that before. Is that a private operation or some kind of government funded program?

It sounds like the only thing equivalent to that here in the United States, is that some credit card companies have a "cash back" program of sorts, where the more you spend on your credit card, the more you can trade in the money or points for things like vacations, air travel, gifts, etc.

I hope the folks at the Pima Museum are reading this thread, because they had a clear plastic donation box in the hangar, filled with cash, and nobody watching it. I chased off two junior thugs trying to break the miniature padlock off the box, twice. The second time I told them I'd feed them their teeth if they didn't stop. :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe:

Brutal punishment for criminals!!

I know that my post is against forum rules and basic humanist principles but I don't want to lie to you... only extreme reaction can stop 'people' like this.

You can bet that the idiots who robbbed the museum have absolutely no idea of the significance of the items that they stole. I cringe at the thought of what they might do with them.

The local Calgary guys should keep an eye on Craigslist for the stolen items. You might not think that crooks would be so dumb, but not all criminals are masterminds --

A friend of mine recently had his Kabota tractor, bush hog and trailer stolen. Several days later he spottend them advertised for sale (with photos) in the local listing on Craigslist. A call to the local police produced a detective who thought he recognized the neighborhood, who then jumped in a patrol car to cruise the area. Voila! There they were sitting in a driveway. Crooks caught and equipment returned. To their credit, the local police also had the towing and impound charges waived.

Sooo - Keep an eye on Craigslist!

(I know that a lot of you guys watch e-Bay closely, so I think that one's already covered.)

I once caught someone trying to cut open the wooden display case that has a piece of the Wright Flyer fabric in it. The nice thing about the NMUSAF is that when we call security local police don't respond, USAF M.P.'s do complete with M-16's.

Someone once climbed over a display and took a replica pistol. Before he made it to the door we had him on camera, and were following him. The police tracked him to his home, and then sent the M.P.'s in. Once the 2nd and 3rd Hummer showed up full of soldiers, he started telling where everyting was he had ever taken from anywhere.

Sad news of the theft to read on WIX, some people have no respect for anything.

I visited the museum earlier this month to see the exhibits, engines and aircraft. I will post photos of the aircraft later this weekend. Calgary is a great place to visit and live.
