A few shots from the first Duxford show. Shame about the light at the end.

The new Tucano colours whould look even better with some light on them. A very big thumbs up to the RAF for the colour scheme though.

Just awesome!!!!!!! :D Who operates Hurricane UP-W again?

That is just too cool seeing those three hurricanes in fairly close markings.

Excellent pictures, as usual, Nick! You should consider doing photography as a profession.

Ditto on the comments, Nick. You really have a gift.

That first Hurri trio pic should be on someone's calendar...just wonderful. :D

Mudge the envious

Wish we could make the July Duxford show but we had to make a choice between Duxford and Bastogne and Bastogne won. Well...there's always next year.

What's the significance of the spam cans and what are the streamers for on the S.E.5?

Thanks chaps

The 2 Cessnas are from Marshalls of Cambridge who do a lot of C130 work and are based nearby. They are celebrating an anniversary this year. The Formation was being led by Andy Sephton who used to be Chief Pilot at Shuttleworth and is a good mate.

Cant take this up professionally, then it would become work!

Good stuff Nick!
bdk wrote:... what are the streamers for on the S.E.5?

Normally the streamers indicate the flight commander (less often the squadron leader, as the RFC / RAF tended to operate in flight rather than Squadron strength) to enable quick identification for re-formation after a dogfight.

There's an argument that some flight commanders avoided them as they also made them a target (as the most experienced pilot) early in a fight.

I think they were adapted originally from message streamers which were carried by Arty Obs (artillery observation) two-seaters to drop to gunners or infantry with a message in the weighted end.

All spoiled by the use of two-way radio. ;)

The Hurricane marked 'UP-W' is R4118, owned by a chap named Peter Vacher. It's currently the only Battle of Britain veteran Hurricane flying, hence the duo display with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Spitfire Mk.II P7350 which is currently the only airworthy Battle of Britain veteran Spitfire. Quite a pairing!

Great pictures Nick, smashing stuff!

Excellent photography. Great job. Love the paint scheme on the Tucano. Those single engine turboprops are so cool. They sort of have that WWII look. Thanks for posting them.

Actually I was lead to believe the ribbons were to help trim the controls by adding drag to that surface. And for recognition as well..
