Just saw it in this mornings paper. My Dad took a ride with him a couple years ago in that plane. Sure glad he & his passenger are OK.

My heart, also, sank when I saw the first headline. Prayers from this end have been answered! Albert, I'm so sorry about the plane, but hearing your dad got away with bumps and scratches is all that really matters. Give him my best.

Congratulations!!!!!! So many of these low altitude engine failures result in fatal injuries when the pilot tries to "save" the plane. You did everything right, and no one was hurt. WELL DONE!

Thanks to all of you for the kind comments. I guess this is a case of a tough old goat flying a tough old bird. The Stearman is a bit of a mess but the condition of the two people on board speaks volumes about crash survivability in a Pt-17. As soon as the FAA is done we will start the restoration. I guess I better get the xpondr back in my Stearman ASAP. Big Al does not like to be without a Stearman to fly for very long. We really have lots to be thankful for this Thursday. Thanks again to all of you folks for the support.

Vickie, Mike, Mitchell, and I went for a walk on the bike path where Al put it. He did an awesome job of putting it in the only spot (and I do mean SPOT) available. It's a great example of "flying it as far into the crash as possible" (quoting Doug R). My uncle owned a Stearman for 30 years and never let me touch the stick. I met Al at Galesburg in '86, offered him a cold drink of water, and he said, "Wanna fly my Stearman?" Three take-offs and landings, and he said, "Go do three more, but don't do nuthin' stupid." Finally, at 32 years old, I soloed a Stearman! He's a great guy and a great pilot. All Warbirders and Antiquers owe a lot to Al, especially me.
