Accurate Miniatures 1/48 SBD-5. What a great model. The upper airbrakes did not want to fit too well but other than that, it was state of the art and makes a great looking kit.

Looks like a nice kit. I always wondered just how the gunner got that last piece of canopy forward and stowed, maximum height allowed for gunners? Or a seat that really dropped down?

That's a great looking build there, very true to life.

How was the build on that, I've done two Accurate Miniatures kits, and had an awful time with both.

mazdaP5 - what Accurate kits did you have problems with? I picked up an Accurate TBM-1C (the Flight 19 boxing) on the cheap at Hobby Lobby this weekend and while the instructions leave plenty to be desired, it looks like a sweet kit. I've read lot of glowing reviews of them on the net, so I'm curious as to what problems you had...

Derek brings up a good point--Accurate Miniatures kits show up at Hobby Lobby fairly frequently, I've picked up a number of their products that way.

Nice job! I wouldn't worry about the fit of the upper dive brakes..the real ones had a fairly big gap as well.

Seriously cool model, I'm awestruck -- but tell you what grabs my attention as much as anything, and that's the photography of it. I'd be all kinds of fascinated with a thread that explored the photographic techniques that arrived at such a spectacular set of pics.

What did you use for the antenna wire? I haven't been able to find a way that works for me. All of time tend to "sag" after a couple days.

Great work on that SBD. I especially like the paint scheme and how it looks like the tones of blue vary a bit. Makes for a very tastefully weathered look.

Wow! What a great model of the SBD.

BTW,you got the canopy sections for the rear gunner spot on...they do fold forward as you have them. As a member of the CAF Dixie Wing with about 20 hrs back seater time I can vouch for back seat time fiddling with those canopy sections! Also nice to see the red trim around the stars & bars; the CAF Dixie Wing a/c is finished for the same period markings.

If you want to further detail your model (if that's possible as it looks so great!) feel free to call the Dixie Wing at 678 982 1824 and ask for any interior pics. If you are around Atlanta feel free to stop by and poke your head around the cockpit.

Here is a pic of the real plane. I came close. Not too bad.

"I needed to do a plane with VMSB-331 at Majuro Atoll in June of 1944. These planes were often transferred from unit to unit and carried non-standard markings. White 12 was formerly White 26. Evidently some dark blue paint was available at the time and used to paint out the old numbers. It is more than likely that the plane came from TASK FORCE 58 from the USS Essex but that is not confirmed." Quote from my own article. Somewhere I can't find anymore, I have a picture of the other side of this plane that shows the 6 of the 26 on the tail with the loop painted in. Now I have to prove it. I will keep looking.

I probably shouldn't say this because then everyone will know what a not-very-nice guy I can be; but although I'm a great admirer of scale models, I tend to be a deadly harsh critic of them. Well, to self, I mean, I keep my big trap shut if I don't have something nice to say. I liked this one right off. But what's more, it is one of the very, very few I've ever seen that just get better every time I come back for another protracted meditative gaze at it (a good model is like a good painting). Thanks for the explanation of the blotted-out tail number; for my money it's one of the most successful incidental little eye-grabber details ever.
