It would be great if there was a "mute" button on all websites that have sound. It is a great site and I hate to pick it apart for that one thing but it drives me nuts! I always have music streaming while on the computer and I'd rather not listen to someone else's choice of music, Digi Plane Effects or Digi Top Gun music.

What a beautiful plane she'll be when done. I was looking though the combat history and didn't see mention of when where and what the 3 victory markings were attributed to. Anyone know?

Wouldn't it be awesome For "Dottie Mae" to be restored and flying in time to reenact her last 6 months of the war over in Europe for the 70th anniversary. Maybe include another pass over the fateful lake that preserved her all these years. (just not so low this time :wink:

) Hmm.....can anyone say "Dottie Mae" and ME 262 formation photoshoot?? (seeing as on one of her missions she did battle with the 262s)

One other question I got is: Every profile or model of DM I've seen shows her wearing Yellow around the cowl and canopy. But in the picture below, the colors although B/W look like anything other than Yellow. Looks like Red or Green to me.

Any explanation for this or am I just daft?

Yellow on the nose of the cowling looks incorrect as well according to the B & W Photo. My BG had a yellow 'K' on their tails and they photo nothing like that one. That looks like red with red canopy as well. So the actual nose art on the model looks like it could be correct.., although I think she was in a black dress with white trim and a green background.

The Allied Fighters site is certainly saying the right things; no parts discarded, preserve as much as possible. This may be a project of uncalculable importance - a trifecta of sorts with regard to historic significance, originality, and ending up in flying condition.

Look at her peers. HJGB is wonderful but a different serial. Upupa Epops is factory perfect but no doubt with alot of replacement parts. Glacier Girl is closer with many more original parts, including weapons. Dottie Mae has the potential to be THE most significant, original warbird of our time. Can't imagine how cool it would be to know that stars and bars on a flying airplane were those painted in 1944. I can't wait to watch this project unfold.

indeed, kudos for preserving and documenting! How about the birds coming out of the Navy's long term storage facility(Lake Michigan)? How much are they replacing as opposed to preserving?

In case you're not familiar with the original Varga illustration, here it is, along with the surviving nose art. The yellow is there, but it looks like it was overpainted with OD. As for the yellow on the cockpit, I've not seen any photos of the plane that suggest there are any remnants of yellow. That is a question for Allied Fighters though.
