Two Hueys flew by low over my neighborhood. I thought we'd retired all of our non-twin Hueys?

I thought this might be a UH-1N, but the engine doghouse doesn't look large enough. Another UH-1H as a VIP Transport? Tail number is just barely visible, O-2xxxx?

will they ever let the C-17's loose to the civies?

You would think FEDEX or UPS could use the heck out of them!!!

They could use them, but not afford them. Boeing didn't get the needed order commitments to complete certification, although the process was started on Boeing's dime. Basically the timing was wrong due to 9/11 and other economic issues. There are new FAA noise regulations coming on line in 2010 and the current C-17 powerplant installation cannot meet them. Basically the window of opportunity has passed.

If someone wanted to buy a C-17 for commercial purposes, it would be subject to the same flight limitations as the Antonov, so there really isn't much of an incentive. If the commercial C-17 had happened, the Antonov would not have been allowed to fly any longer in the US I'm told because a certified alternative would have been available.

This is all 3rd and 4th hand to me (Aviation Leak and "friend of a friend of a friend" stuff), so please don't quote me on any of this.

That is pretty much the case, although the Antonovs can fit a lot of payloads that the C-17 can't, so I would suspect that they'd loose some business, but not nearly as much as most would think because they're not used for weight as much as volume and Lockheed (for example) uses the An-124 to move their Rocket Engines and their rockets because the C-5 can't fit them (not even the C-5C) and they just barely fit in the An-124 as it is.

Hal,

On an un-associated note, had Jeff Greer made any progress on his Bravo 369 project? I haven't heard anything about it since last year.

Just saw a U-2 Spy plane orbiting over northern Santa Rosa en route to the Pacific Coast Air Museum airshow this weekend at the Charles M. Schulz airport. After three orbits the pilot headed west towards my place (3 1/2 miles from the airport). He was flying about 1500' or so. I can hear him now making flyby's over the airport.
I'm going to a Beer Revival and BBQ cook off along the Russian River today. Tomorrow I'll head out to the airport. A lot of great Warbirds out there this weekend.
Jim

Still plugging along. Good things take time...

Hmmm, just noticed the link to the projects web-site is now a dud; I'll ask him about it tomorrow.

Oh yeah, and to keep on this thread on track; I saw a Skycrane and an Albatross clearing customs to head south. The Albatross was a welcome little addition to the museums open house for a short time.
