I live in Olney, Tx the home of Air Tractor. Here is a link to the new counter-insurgency aircraft they took to the Paris airshow. and it would seem to have been well received.

They have been used for more than dusting for years.

I remember back in the late 80s there were two dark blue air tractors on the ramp at Brownsville. Each had two cockpits and lots of radio equipment along with FLIR .

They were used to spy on some one from about 3000 feet. It was said at that altutude and the five blad prop made them almost silent.

They also have producedsome blue ones that have armored cockpits, self sealing tanks that are used by some south american countries for spraying drug crops. Then they come back to Air Tractor to get the BULLET holes fixed. One came back with the tail almost shot off. I guess the drug guys don't like their crops being killed, and they shoot at the planes A LOT. Not my idea of a good flying job.

one of my friends flew armoured AT's in Golden Triangle area of Burma/Thai border.

He was always armed. quote: "to shoot myself if I went down!"

He said he was fired on numerous times. Most ops were conducted at night time, hence the blue/black colour scheme.
